Chiang Mai Launches ฿100M Electric Bus Project with Fare Cap of 20 Baht
A new era of public transportation is dawning in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with the launch of a ฿100 million (approximately $2.8 million USD) electric bus (EV Bus) project designed to enhance accessibility, reduce pollution, and improve the quality of life for residents and tourists. The initiative, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) signed on December 16th, unites the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization with 11 key organizations.
A Vision for a “Just City” and Sustainable Mobility
The project’s core ambition extends beyond simply modernizing the bus fleet. It aims to establish Chiang Mai as a “Just City,” where equitable access to public transportation is a fundamental right. According to representatives from the Travel Rights Council, a collaborative body of academic institutions, public sector entities, and consumer networks, public transport should be considered a vital public welfare service.
“The public sector expects the organization of Chiang Mai’s public transportation system to be centered on ‘Everyone’s travel rights’,” stated a consumer representative at a recent forum. “People are the users of the service, and that’s why we founded the Travel Rights Council – to drive the development of a truly accessible system.”
Project Details: 40 Electric Buses and Affordable Fares
The first phase of the project will introduce 40 electric buses operating on a frequent schedule – every 10 minutes – throughout the city. A key feature of the service is the fare structure, which will be capped at 20 baht (approximately $0.56 USD) for all routes. These buses are specifically designed with accessibility in mind, featuring low-bed designs to accommodate the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
Safety and security are also paramount. The new fleet will be equipped with CCTV cameras and a real-time vehicle tracking system connected directly to the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization’s control center.
Route Information and Expansion Plans
The initial rollout will focus on two primary routes:
- Line 18: Chiang Mai Provincial Bus Terminal 2 (Arcade) – Chiang Mai Railway Station – Kruba Sriwichai Monument
- Line 20: Chiang Mai Provincial Bus Terminal 2 – Chaloem Phrakiat International Convention and Exhibition Center – Chiang Mai Provincial Government Center – Nakornping Hospital
The Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization plans to secure funding through the Local Administrative Organization Fund, pending council approval. Procurement processes are anticipated to begin in February-March 2026, with private sector proposals being actively solicited.
Addressing Urban Challenges and Fostering a Smart City
This collaborative effort is intended to address critical urban challenges, including traffic congestion and air pollution – specifically, the reduction of PM2.5 dust levels. Beyond environmental benefits, the project aims to connect key areas of Chiang Mai, including tourist attractions, economic hubs, and essential government facilities.
“This project is about creating awareness of the need for development in Chiang Mai,” said Pichai Lertphong Adisorn, Mayor of the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization. “We want to build a livable city with an efficient, convenient, safe, and environmentally friendly public transportation system, laying the foundation for a smart city.”
Prioritizing Accessibility and Information Access
Earlier this year, the Travel Rights Council conducted public forums – including “Chiang Mai Public Transport Can Be Designed” – to gather input from residents. Key priorities identified through these consultations include ensuring universal access to the transportation system and improving the availability of public transport information. Specifically, the council advocates for comprehensive bus stop information, clear route maps, and a robust digital database system.
The project’s success hinges on a commitment to inclusivity and user-centric design, ultimately transforming Chiang Mai’s public transportation landscape and solidifying its position as a forward-thinking, sustainable city.
