Frankfurt – With October, not only the cold season but also the much controversial time change is getting closer and closer. Traditionally, the clocks are set to winter time on the last Sunday in October. This initially means more sleep, but also that it gets darker earlier in the evening.

Time change in October: Why does Ukraine use winter time permanently?

Ukraine will set its clocks to winter time for the last time this year. After that, winter time should officially apply year-round, according to the agency Interfax already reported in the summer, citing members of the Verkhovna Rada. Some of the reasons for ending the time change in Ukraine are the same as those cited by critics in Germany and other European countries.

In addition, Ukraine wants to use this decision to express a clear demarcation from its neighboring country Russia, which invaded Ukraine more than two years ago. Previously, Ukrainian summer time from the end of March to the end of October was identical to Moscow time throughout the year. With the new time zone, Ukraine wants to set an example in the war. Going forward, the time limit is meant to “facilitate the evacuation and reintegration of temporarily occupied areas”.

Summer and winter time: arguments for and against the annual time changes

Time change has long been a controversial topic in Europe. While some people enjoy the “longer” summer evenings and earlier daylight in the winter, many would like to end the time change and save daylight permanently. However, such a decision requires the consent of all 27 EU member states, which has not yet been granted.

The original reason for the time change was, among other things, to save energy by making better use of daylight. However, since such savings have not been recognized in recent years, many are now speaking out against it. One of the most common arguments against the change is that it disrupts the biorhythms of humans and animals twice a year. This can lead to sleep disorders, concentration problems and other disadvantages. The ADAC also warns that the number of wildlife-related accidents increases every year, especially around the time change. (nz)
