On December 3, a press conference on “Organic Viticulture: Challenges and Features” was held at the RA Ministry of Economy.
The speakers at the press conference were: Zaruhi Muradyan, Executive Director of the Viticulture and Winery Foundation of Armenia, Varsik Martirosyan, Deputy Head of the Department of Primary Agricultural Products of the RA Ministry of Economy, Hovakim Saghatelyan, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Trinity Canyon Gardens, and Nune Darbinyan, Certification Director of Ecoglobe Company.
Hovakim Saghatelyan, the co-founder and executive director of Trinity Canyon Gardens, presented to the journalists the first certified organic wines of Armenia made from the certified organic grapes of Trinity Gardens.
The company started the official certification process in 2015, during which time the vineyards were brought up to approved organic standards, and in 2018, with the support of the Austrian Development Agency, Trinity completed the certification process by having the vineyards certified as organic by the organic certification body Eco Globe LLC. in accordance with EU, US and Armenian standards. In 2019, the wines “Trinity 6100 Areni Sev 2018” and “Kachmeruk Areni Syrah Red 2018” were certified as certified organic.
“Owning an organic wine production has always been one of the strong ideas of our team. Although organic viticulture is quite a labor-intensive, delicate and expensive endeavor, Trinity has never backed down from its overarching goal of not harming nature as much as possible,” said Hovakim Saghatelyan, co-founder and director of Trinity Canyon Gardens, adding that as a result of this process, exceptional wines are created that, truly , reflect the essence of the Armenian land, while preserving it for future generations.
“Organic viticulture is gaining importance all over the world. organic vineyards are increasing by 25% every year. The Foundation attaches great importance to this initiative and considers it an achievement of the sector. We are confident that organic wines labeled “Made in Armenia” will provide new opportunities for export to Armenian wine industry, and Armenian organic wine, why not, will become Armenia’s calling card in the international arena, “said Zaruhi Muradyan, Executive Director of the Armenian Winery.
“We welcome the organizers of this bold initiative, because we attach great importance to the role of organic agriculture in Armenia as a means of restoring a healthy agro-ecosystem and healthy agriculture,” said Varsik Martirosyan, Deputy Head of the Department of Primary Agricultural Products of the Ministry of Economy.
According to Nune Darbinyan, certification director of “Eco Globe” company, organic viticulture and winemaking is forming a new culture in the field of wine industry. The organic farming standard in agricultural production can be considered an environmental standard, which not only improves the environment, but also has a positive effect on human health.
