Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva canceled his trip to Russia for the BRICS summit due to a head injury he received after falling in the bathroom.
AP and BBC reported this, citing local sources.
Lula da Silve planned to go to the BRICS summit on October 21, an organization that includes large countries in the world in terms of territory and population, such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, as well as Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. However, the 78-year-old politician’s plans changed after an injury.
The capital’s hospital recommended that the president refrain from long trips, and he will take part in the summit meetings via videoconference. Lula reportedly suffered a laceration to the back of his head.
Although his office has not disclosed details of the incident, Brazilian media, citing doctors, write that the president fell in the bathroom, after which he needed five stitches. After receiving medical assistance, he was released home.
Lula’s first face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin was planned. It was previously reported that the Kremlin dictator himself is not going to participate in the G20 summit, which will be held in Brazil next month, as his visit could cause a resonance.
It is worth noting that last year Putin missed the BRICS summit in South Africa due to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. This has created diplomatic tension as South Africa and Brazil, as signatories to the Rome Statute, are required to detain those involved in the court’s warrants. However, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa then noted that arresting Putin in his country would be equivalent to a declaration of war.
Earlier, Cursor reported that the canceled tender for the supply of Israeli Atmos 2000 self-propelled artillery systems (self-propelled guns) became the cause of disagreements between Brazilian President Lula da Silva and Defense Minister Celso Amorim.
