Matilde Montoya She broke barriers by becoming the first doctor in Mexico.
She was born on March 14, 1857 in Mexico City and, from a young age, she showed an interest in medicine, managing to successfully examine herself as a midwife in Cuernavaca at the age of 14. However, his path was not easy.
Upon her return to the National School of Medicine in Mexico City, she faced a conservative society that disapproved of women’s participation in certain disciplines, especially dissections, due to the prejudices of the time.

Despite these difficulties, Montoya persevered. On August 24, 1887, at the age of 30, she graduated as the first doctor in the countrymarking a milestone in the history of women in the liberal professions in Mexico.
Her achievement was not only a personal breakthrough, but it inspired future generations of women to pursue careers in fields that were previously closed to them.
Although his achievement was celebrated by some, he also faced criticism, as at the time he was considered “improper” for a woman to dedicate herself to medicine.
