Bac+4 between selfies, dance and marketing. A university in central Ireland has launched a new four-year “Content Creation and Social Media” course at the start of the school year in September. It quickly found success among students, as 350 of them applied for just 30 places upon arrival.
Among these, Marta Hughes Bravo, who praises this new proposal from the South East Technological University (SETU) of Carlow: “Many people think it’s easy to be an influencer, just post 60-second videos on TikTok. But it’s much more than that! » insists the student. Content creation involves “editing, planning, organizing, etc., it takes longer than you think, people don’t really understand it,” insists the young woman.
A “huge appetite” for this type of dish
The course was created by Irene McCormick, a former television producer. He began teaching by first offering an intensive course led by TikTokers each summer. “The project was incredibly successful, we saw that there was a huge appetite, so we decided to aim for diploma level,” he explains, before adding that the phenomenon “is far-reaching”.
This is the first training of its kind in Ireland. According to her, most students are already immersed in the digital world but are looking for additional tools and know-how: “You can try to learn on your own at home, but gaining practical and theoretical knowledge on how to reach a target audience will do a big difference in your career,” he says.
Video, psychology and storytelling courses
These unique studies teach aspiring influencers how to turn their presence and content on platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube into a source of income. After two years of preparation, the course was approved and welcomed its first group of 15 students last month. Degree programs include courses in video creation, entrepreneurship, psychology and storytelling, data analytics, and podcast production.
“We are interested in how to monetise your influence among a large online audience,” explains Irene McCormick, according to whom the employment possibilities following training are numerous. “About 70% of marketers today believe that influencers are the future of marketing, even governments use them to spread messages,” he points out. “Influencers‘ posts on social media can sometimes be frivolous, but the business itself is not, it’s a very serious business.”
