Today, Sunday, Basra Governor’s Advisor for Agriculture Affairs, Alaa Al-Badran, announced a government intention to establish a dam in the Shatt Al-Arab, while stressing the need to improve water quality and protect its sources.

Al-Badran told the (INA): “The salinity of the Shatt al-Arab water is witnessing a fluctuation ranging between the critical limit of 3000 TDS and 2000 TDS, according to the flow of water coming from the Karun River in Iran.”
Al-Badran added, “Constructing a dam in the Shatt al-Arab is an important step to improve water quality and protect freshwater sources for irrigation and agricultural purposes in large areas of Basra Governorate.”
He stressed “the importance of the flow of water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in improving the quality of the Shatt al-Arab water and pushing the salt tongue towards the Arabian Gulf.”
