Expert: Panos Vlachos, Actor and Co-Creator of “17 Threads”
Editor: Good evening, Panos! Thank you for joining us today. The premiere of “17 Threads” on MEGA has generated much excitement. Can you tell us a bit about what viewers can expect from the series?
Panos Vlachos: Thank you for having me! “17 Threads” dives deep into one of the bloodiest chapters of Greece’s history during the early 1900s. It’s a six-episode fictional dramatization based on real events, focusing on the tragic journey of Anthony Castellanis, my character, who faces grave injustices that lead to his transformation and quest for revenge.
Editor: That sounds intense. The story centers around themes of injustice and vengeance. What drew you, personally, to this character and his story?
Panos Vlachos: The character of Anthony is incredibly multifaceted. At first, we see him as a beloved young man—a talented cobbler and musician. His wrongful accusation and subsequent struggle pull at the heartstrings and shed light on the social issues of the time. I was attracted to the complexity of his journey; he transitions from an innocent man into someone consumed by the desire for revenge, which raises questions about morality and justice.
Editor: The series is based on the book by Panos Dimakis. How closely does the show follow the source material, and what aspects did you find particularly compelling?
Panos Vlachos: While the series remains faithful to the book’s overarching themes and events, we’ve added dramatic elements to enhance the storytelling. The emotional depth and the character’s development arcs are particularly compelling, especially how society responds to injustice and the ripple effects it creates. At its core, “17 Threads” is not just about a personal vendetta; it’s also a reflection of the societal failures of the time.
Editor: Your portrayal of Castellanis has been highly anticipated. What sort of preparation did you undertake to embody this character?
Panos Vlachos: Immersing myself in the historical context was crucial. I studied the societal norms of that era, listened to music from that time, and even practiced playing the lyre to connect with Anthony’s artistic side. Additionally, I explored the emotional range that comes with betrayal and loss. Bringing authenticity to such a tragic character required a lot of empathy and understanding of his pain.
Editor: The visuals and direction by Sotiris Tsafoulias are also generating buzz. How do you think the cinematography contributes to the series’ themes?
Panos Vlachos: Sotiris has a unique way of creating a haunting atmosphere that complements the narrative perfectly. The cinematography enhances the emotional weight of the story. By utilizing shadows and sharp contrasts, it visually represents the duality of light and dark—the hope and despair that Anthony encounters. Each scene is crafted to draw the audience into his world, making the unfolding tragedies feel palpable.
Editor: For viewers who may not be familiar with this historical event, what message do you hope they take away from ”17 Threads”?
Panos Vlachos: I hope audiences will reflect on the implications of justice, the power of resilience, and the importance of speaking out against wrongdoing. “17 Threads” is a tribute not only to those who suffered injustice but also a reminder that history must be acknowledged to prevent its recurrence. It’s a story of hope buried beneath the weight of despair.
Editor: Thank you, Panos! It sounds like “17 Threads” will be an emotional and thought-provoking series. We look forward to seeing your performance and the impact it will have on viewers.
Panos Vlachos: Thank you! I’m excited for everyone to experience Anthony’s story and engage with this significant piece of our history.
