– The Moldovan people have made a clear choice – they have chosen a path towards economic growth and stability, said Ukraine‘s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a statement on Monday morning.
Pro-European Sandu won the second round of the presidential election with around 54 percent of the votes, ahead of the more Russia-friendly opponent Alexandr Stoianoglo.
Zelenskyy promises that the ties between Ukraine and Moldova will now become stronger. Both countries applied for EU membership in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
– Only security and a peaceful, united Europe can guarantee every person and family the safety to move into tomorrow with hope, Zelenskyy added.
Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Sandu has safely guided Moldova through difficult times and set the country on the path towards the EU.
– We stand by Moldova’s side in this. Congratulations on being re-elected as president, Scholz wrote on X.
The election has been marked by allegations of Russian interference in the former Soviet country, which French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged in his congratulations to Sandu.
– I congratulate Maia Sandu on being re-elected to lead Moldova. Democracy has triumphed over interference and maneuvers from the outside. France will stand by Moldova’s side on the country’s European journey, Macron stated on X.
Interview: The Future of Moldova and its Place in Europe
Interviewer (Time.news Editor): Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Elena Ionescu, a political analyst and expert on Eastern European affairs. With the recent presidential election results in Moldova and the implications of international relationships in the region, we have a lot to discuss. Dr. Ionescu, welcome!
Dr. Elena Ionescu: Thank you for having me. It’s a critical time for Moldova, and I’m glad to share my insights.
Editor: President Zelenskyy remarked on Moldova’s choice for economic growth and stability following Maia Sandu’s re-election. What do you believe that means for the future of Moldova and indeed, its relationship with Ukraine?
Dr. Ionescu: Zelenskyy’s statement underscores a significant shift towards pro-European policies in Moldova. With Maia Sandu securing about 54 percent of the vote against a Russia-friendly opponent, it signals a clear mandate for reforms. This strengthens the ties between Moldova and Ukraine, especially as both countries pursue EU membership, initiated after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. We can expect closer economic cooperation and a united front in European integration efforts.
Editor: Chancellor Olaf Scholz highlighted Sandu’s ability to guide Moldova through difficult times. What challenges do you think she and her administration will face going forward?
Dr. Ionescu: The challenges are multifaceted. First, addressing economic instability and implementing reforms required for EU accession will be crucial. Additionally, there are external pressures, primarily from Russia, which has historically sought to exert influence over Moldova. Allegations of Russian interference noted during the election reflect ongoing strategic tensions that need to be navigated carefully.
Editor: President Macron mentioned that “democracy has triumphed over interference.” How do you see the international community playing a role in supporting Moldova’s democratic process?
Dr. Ionescu: The international community’s support is vital. By standing alongside Moldova and committing to its European journey, countries like France and Germany bolster its sovereignty. This support can take many forms: political backing, financial aid, and diplomatic pressure against any foreign interference. The EU itself can provide significant resources for democratic reforms and stability.
Editor: Given the geopolitical implications, what practical advice would you give to readers who want to understand or engage with Moldova’s ongoing transformation?
Dr. Ionescu: I advise readers to stay informed about Moldova’s developments, particularly regarding its EU accession process. Connecting with NGOs that work in Eastern Europe can provide insights and opportunities for civic engagement. Moreover, raising awareness about the challenges Moldova faces can foster a deeper understanding of global politics and the importance of supporting democratic movements in the region. Lastly, supporting local businesses and initiatives can contribute to economic stability in Moldova.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Ionescu, for your insights into the current situation in Moldova. The path towards a democratic and stable Moldova is undoubtedly complex, but with continued international support, there is hope for a prosperous future.
Dr. Ionescu: Thank you for the conversation. It’s an important time for Moldova, and I’m optimistic about its pro-European trajectory.
