OR The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, was elected ”Person of the Year” by Time magazine on Thursday for the second time.
The republican, it is worth remembering, had already been elected ‘Person of the year’ by the magazine in 2016, the year in which he was elected to the presidency of the United States for the first time. Though, he is not the only American president to have been honored twice by Time.
The same happened with Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. For his part, Ronald Reagan appeared in the magazine in 1980 and 1983 as “Man of the Year”.
Franklin D. Roosevelt is the only American president to be honored three times by Time.
In addition, it should be noted that several controversial figures were distinguished, such as the dictator Joseph Stalin, who appeared on the cover of the magazine in 1939 and 1942. Mikhail Gorbachev received recognition in 1987 and 1989.
In announcing trump on Thursday, Time noted that “for 97 years, TIME editors have chosen the Person of the year: the individual who, for better or worse, has done the most to shape the world and headlines in the last 12 months.
Time pointed out that “since he began running for president in 2015, perhaps no individual has played a greater role in changing the course of politics and history than Trump.”
Recalling that Trump “shocked many by winning the White House in 2026”, the magazine recalled that the then-president “led the united States during a chaotic term”, which “ended with his defeat in the elections by seven million of votes” and provoked “the violent attack on the Capitol.”
Yet, four years later, Donald Trump “eliminated his Republican rivals in near-record time” and, “for weeks, campaigned largely from a New York courthouse, where he would be convicted of 34 felonies.”
“For making a comeback of historic proportions, for leading a once-in-a-lifetime political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and changing America’s role in the world, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2024 Person of the Year,” the publication said .
In this edition, names such as Kamala Harris, Kate Middleton, Elon Musk and Benjamin Netanyahu were left behind.
