Local officials said a drone collided with a high-rise residential building in the city, which has a population of more than 1.3 million people, causing damage to the building, but causing no casualties.
Although attacks on Russian territory have so far been rare, Ukrainian drones have previously targeted Kazan and the surrounding oil-rich region of Tatarstan.
Video clips on Russian social media showed drones colliding with a high-rise building and fireballs.
The spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said that two drones hit a 37-storey residential building.
“Today Kazan was under a large-scale drone attack,” Rustam Minnikhanov, the President of Tatarstan, said on Telegram.
