“We were right and we are still right that this war has no solution on the battlefield, but only at the negotiating table,” said Szijjarto.
He added: “In order for us to sit at the negotiating table to find a long-term peaceful solution, the right conditions need to be found, specifically a ceasefire, and I believe that could be next Christmas or to provide a great opportunity for that, even if only for a few days.”
On December 11, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, put forward a proposal for a ceasefire and a major prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine during the Christmas period that Moscow agreed to study to do this initiative, but Kiev categorically refused it.
Szijjártó noted that it is Hungary’s task to present the appropriate proposal, but the following depends on Zelensky: “Let the people of Ukraine decide.”
Last week, Zelensky criticized Orban for a phone call with Putin, in which they discussed the possibility of establishing a “long-term and sustainable” peace in Europe.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that Budapest requested a phone conversation between Orban and Zelensky from Kiev, but received an “unfortunate refusal.”
