Chanee, protector of gibbons in Indonesia: “We must no longer theorize, but act”

He has been fascinated by great apes since he was a child… And it was in Indonesia that he was able to satisfy his passion: for 24 years, with his association Kalaweit, he has saved thousands of gibbons and other animals, threatened by poaching and deforestation in Sumatra and Borneo. But their resettlement in their natural environment becomes more and more difficult, since the forest disappears, replaced by gigantic palm oil plantations, harmful to the environment (pollution of the air and waterways in particular).

The only solution to preserve biodiversity as a whole: buy plots of forest to turn them into protected reserves where hunting is prohibited, but where local populations can continue their ancestral activities. This is what Chanee is currently doing in the Dulan Forest in Borneo, in the name of “active conservation “, with immediate effects (unlike the “passive conservation which only publishes reports, far from the field). A fight waged despite threats, intimidation and corruption, with the support of the villagers.
