The studio, celebrated for its innovative storytelling, is seeing its original films struggle to resonate with audiences likewise as its sequels, reboots, and films based on established intellectual property. The upcoming release of “Elio” faces the tough challenge of proving that originality can still triumph at the box office.
For decades, Pixar has been synonymous with animated brilliance. The Emeryville-based studio churned out hits, whether the subject was toys, fish, or a grumpy old man. Now, they’re navigating a changed landscape.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the animation industry, including Pixar, has faced a box office conundrum. While audiences express a desire for fresh stories, ticket sales often favor familiar titles. “Inside Out 2” is a prime example, dominating the genre.
The “Elio” Test
Pixar’s latest original film, “Elio,” is poised for release. Box office analysts predict an opening weekend of $18 million to $25 million in the U.S. and Canada. With a budget between $150 million and $200 million, this debut would be considered soft by Pixar’s standards.
Doug Creutz, a senior media and entertainment analyst at TD Cowen, notes that original animated films have struggled as the pandemic. Despite critical acclaim, the box office numbers haven’t reflected it.
The sequel Strategy
Pixar executives, though, are steadfast in their commitment to original stories. Pete Docter,Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, emphasized the importance of original films, stating,”You wouldn’t have Pixar without ‘Toy Story,’ our first original film 30 years ago!”
Disney and Pixar’s previous original movie “Elemental” debuted with $29.6 million in 2023, but earned $496 million worldwide. walt disney Animation Studios also saw struggles with originals like 2022’s “Strange World” and 2023’s “Wish.”
The pandemic profoundly affected theatrical attendance. Studios initially placed new animated movies on streaming services. Movies like 2020’s “Soul,” 2021’s “Luca,” and 2022’s “Turning Red” went directly to Disney+. “Soul,” despite critical acclaim, grossed only $121.9 million theatrically.
Challenges and Opportunities
The poor performance of Pixar’s “Lightyear” highlights the challenges, including timing issues and marketing problems. Other studios face similar hurdles. Worldwide Pictures’ “Migration” also had a soft box office, although the studio saw significant gains with “The Super Mario Bros.Movie.”
family films are currently dominating the box office. This summer, films like Warner Bros.Pictures’ “A Minecraft Movie,” and live-action remakes “Lilo & Stitch” from Disney and “How to Train Your Dragon” from Universal have been accomplished.
Last year, “Inside Out 2” earned nearly $1.7 billion globally, while Universal and Illumination Entertainment’s “Despicable Me 4” grossed $969.6 million worldwide and Disney’s “Moana 2” made $1 billion. These successes share a common trait: they are sequels, reboots, or based on existing intellectual property.
Industry insiders worry that relying solely on existing stories could make the animation space stagnant.Creutz of TD Cowen says that “If you’re trying to grow the business, you need new content, you need new franchises, you need new things for people to be excited about.”
Pixar is also leveraging the broader Disney ecosystem. Movies eventually appear on Disney+, and characters appear in merchandise and theme parks. David A. Gross, who writes a movie industry newsletter, says, “Pixar is in the long-term business.”
The Road Ahead
Pixar plans to release three movies every two years, with a strategy of one original film for every sequel. “Elio” was delayed by the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes and swapped release dates with “Inside Out 2.”
Christopher Holliday, a senior lecturer at King’s College London, highlights Pixar’s impact on computer-animated films. The studio is now balancing innovation with established audience preferences.
Next year, Pixar will release “Toy Story 5” along with an original film called “Hoppers.” In 2027, pixar plans to debut “Gatto,” another original film.
Docter says, “We think audiences love originals too… if we do our jobs, and create something that people will love, we trust that audiences will show up.”
