Trio: New Kia Niro

In the second generation of the SUV Niro, Kia is sticking to the triad of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric car. There’s a little more space, a new modern dashboard and a sustainable interior.
Dhe electrification of the car world is unstoppable. The Korean manufacturer Kia, which belongs to Hyundai, has now announced “Electrification everywhere” and wants to have fourteen purely electric models in its portfolio by 2027. Electric cars are nothing new for Kia. The SUV Soul and Niro have been on the road as battery cars since 2018, and the Niro will be in the race for customer favors in a new version this summer.
As before, the trio of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and purely electric vehicles will remain. The hybrid combines a 1.6-liter petrol engine with a 44-hp electric motor, together offering 141 hp and a relatively modest maximum torque of 144 Newton meters. With the plug-in, the same engine is combined with a more powerful electric motor, then 183 hp and 203 Nm are available. The possible all-electric range is 65 kilometers.
The strongest of the Niro trio only drives electrically. Its power plant offers 204 hp and a maximum torque of 255 Nm. A 65 kWh battery ensures a range of around 460 kilometers. It can be charged with 100 kW. Kia promises that the battery can be charged from ten to eighty percent in three quarters of an hour. All Niro have front-wheel drive.

The second generation is around six centimeters longer than the first, with an exterior length of 4.42 meters, the Niro is still one of the compact SUVs. The design of the dashboard is reminiscent of the also new EV6 and Kia Sportage. A large, slightly curved display with a width of almost 80 centimeters dominates. A first seat test suggests relatively generous space, leather seats are frowned upon from now on, all related materials are sustainable. The trunk volume is a maximum of around 1400 liters, there are slight cuts in the plug-in. Prices start at 30,690 euros for the hybrid, the E-Niro costs 30,420 euros, thanks to the premium.
