Severe Weather: Regions Facing Heavy Rain & Impacts

Italy Braces for Severe Storms as Heatwave Breaks

A dramatic shift in weather patterns is set to bring torrential rainfall and violent thunderstorms to Italy, following a period of unusually warm and stable conditions. The change is driven by a weakening of the African anticyclone and the resurgence of Atlantic disturbed currents, promising a stark contrast to the early summer heat.

After enjoying a particularly stable and warm early summer, Italy’s initial days of July attempted to maintain the pleasant weather. However, atmospheric conditions are rapidly evolving, signaling a significant deterioration in the forecast for the coming days.

Shifting Barometric Pressure and Incoming Disturbances

The baric picture is expected to undergo a substantial transformation throughout the weekend and into next week. According to meteorological analysis, the African anticyclone is retreating, allowing Atlantic weather systems to move in and trigger a marked worsening of conditions.

The first significant disturbance is anticipated to arrive on Sunday, July 6th, with a second wave following on Monday, July 7th. The effects of this second system could linger into Tuesday, July 8th. A key factor exacerbating the potential for severe weather is the substantial heat that has built up across the country, providing ample energy for the development of intense thunderstorms.

Extreme Rainfall Expected, Particularly in Northern Italy

Rainfall accumulations are forecast to be exceptionally high, particularly across Northern Italy. Areas from the foothills of Eastern Piedmont to Friuli could see accumulations of 100-150 mm, with localized amounts exceeding that figure. The Alps and Prealps are predicted to receive up to 200 mm of rainfall.

Even the plains of Northern Italy, north of the Po River, could experience 50-80 mm of precipitation, with the possibility of even higher totals in areas experiencing prolonged rainfall. The regions expected to be most heavily impacted include Eastern Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

During July 7th and 8th, thunderstorms are also expected to extend into the internal areas of Central Italy and the Apennine mountains, with a possibility of reaching coastal areas.

The incoming weather system represents a significant departure from the recent heatwave and demands heightened preparedness from residents and authorities alike.
