Airport Hotels Become New Year’s Eve Sanctuaries for Anxious Pets

more and more pet owners are seeking refuge from New Year’s eve fireworks in the soundproofed havens of airport hotels, offering a peaceful option for their furry companions.

The annual spectacle of fireworks, while a source of joy for many, represents a period of intense stress for animals. As New Year’s Eve approaches, a growing number of pet owners in Switzerland are opting for an unconventional solution: booking rooms at hotels located near the airport. These establishments, designed to minimize noise disruption for travelers, are proving to be surprisingly effective sanctuaries for dogs and other pets terrified by the loud bangs of pyrotechnics.

A Growing Trend Driven by Animal Welfare

The discomfort experienced by animals during fireworks displays is well-documented. “Dogs hear much better than us,” explains Christina Bucher, owner of Oriana, a black Labrador who suffers substantially from the noise. “They then try to hide and react with stress symptoms such as a racing pulse, panting and yelping.” Bucher, a qualified anesthesiologist who utilizes Oriana as a therapy dog at Bülach Hospital, believes a national ban on fireworks would be ideal, stating, “It’s really torture for all animals.”

To protect Oriana from the trauma of New Year’s Eve, Bucher has adopted a proactive approach. “We’re moving to a hotel at the airport,” she says, currently booked into the Leonardo Hotel due to its well-insulated rooms. She notes that at least 14 dogs are already registered to stay at the Leonardo on New Year’s Eve, with many returning annually. “Some are now there every year and know each other. We all really appreciate this offer.”

Airport Hotels Cater to a Unique Demand

The Leonardo Hotel isn’t alone in capitalizing on this trend. the Radisson Blu, located directly in the airport terminal, has already booked over 70 dogs, with more reservations anticipated. Hotel director Chris Jung reports a “loyal customer base” who consistently choose the Radisson Blu for New Year’s Eve. “The dogs are frequently enough more relaxed than their owners,” Jung observes, expecting a fully booked house with its 330 rooms.

For those seeking a more budget-pleasant option, the Radisson in Rümlang offers rooms starting around 154 francs, and has already secured bookings for 25 dogs. “This is probably an insider tip for dogs,” Jung jokes, acknowledging the growing awareness of this quieter alternative.

A Costly, But Worthwhile, Solution

While a hotel stay represents an added expense, many owners find the peace of mind invaluable. Bucher’s overnight stay at the Leonardo Hotel with Oriana costs approximately 170 francs, including a 25 franc surcharge for the dog to cover additional cleaning. The Leonardo Hotel even offers a special New Year’s Eve menu tailored for canine palates, featuring a three-course meal for 14 francs – a carrot-apple puree appetizer, a potato and zucchini stew main course, and banana and quark bites for dessert. Heartier eaters can opt for a minced beef, rice, and vegetable plate for 18 francs.

Beyond Hotels: Alternative Strategies for pet Comfort

For pet owners unable to secure hotel accommodations, alternative strategies can offer some relief. While customary methods like closing shutters and playing calming music may have limited effect, seeking shelter in a basement or air raid shelter can provide a more considerable sense of security. “Many animals promptly notice that there is a state of emergency,” warns Bucher. However, she firmly recommends a hotel visit as the most effective solution. “I can only recommend it.”

The increasing demand for pet-friendly airport hotels underscores a growing awareness of animal welfare and a willingness among pet owners to prioritize their companions’ comfort during possibly distressing events. As the New Year approaches, these hotels are poised to offer a haven of peace for both pets and their owners, proving that a quiet celebration can be a happy one for all.
