“Marie Stuart” to Grace the Stage in Reims This October

A compelling new production of Friedrich Schiller’s historical tragedy, “Marie Stuart,” will be staged at the Comedy CDN de Reims from October 2nd to 9th, 2025, offering audiences a deep dive into the tumultuous lives of two iconic queens.

The upcoming performances promise a captivating exploration of power, betrayal, and religious conflict. Based on the true story of Marie Stuart, Queen of Scotland, and her imprisonment in 1587, the play delves into the complex relationship between Marie and Elisabeth I, Queen of England. The production, a translation by Sylvain Fort and staged by Chloé Dabert, aims to bring Schiller’s 1800 masterpiece to life with a cast of twelve interpreters.

A Historical Drama Unfolds

Schiller’s work centers on the accusations leveled against Marie Stuart – plotting against her Protestant rival, Elisabeth I. The play is described as a “striking historical tragedy,” a space where “political and suspense room” converge, and where the destinies of these two “magnificent female characters” collide. According to a production release, the core themes of the play include conspiracies, intimate dilemmas, rivalries of power, and the pervasive influence of religious fanaticism.

“The humanity of the characters comes up against public opinion, the reason of state,” the release stated, highlighting the play’s enduring relevance.
