A shooting in Washington D.C.’s Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood injured five people Friday night, prompting a search for multiple suspects and a black Honda Accord with District of Columbia tags. All five victims are expected to survive, according to investigators.
Scene of the Shooting
The incident occurred at approximately 9:20 p.m. on December 26th, the day after Christmas, at the intersection of 5th and N Streets Northwest. 5th Street Market, a popular local gathering spot, sustained visible damage, with bullet holes marking the storefront. “Something crazy must have happened, and we knew it must have been some sort of shooting or something like that,” said a nearby resident.
Initial reports indicated police discovered three victims at the scene. Two additional individuals later sought medical attention at a local hospital independently. A police surveillance camera positioned on the corner is expected to provide crucial evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Community Concerns and Past Incidents
Residents describe the market as a frequent hangout, with groups of up to ten people often congregating in the area. “Groups of six to eight to ten can be seen just sort of like hanging out here,” explained another local. “So I’m not overly surprised that on a Friday night something would happen.”
The shooting has understandably heightened anxieties within the community, particularly in light of a similar incident earlier this year. In June, a shooting just a block away at M and 7th Streets Northwest resulted in the death of Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, 21, a congressional intern, and injuries to two others. Police have since made an arrest in that case.
Increased Security Presence
In the wake of Friday’s shooting, a noticeable increase in security measures has been implemented. Reports indicate a heavy National Guard presence in the area, with soldiers observed patrolling near 5th Street Market on Saturday morning.
One neighbor expressed sympathy for the business owners, highlighting the diverse nature of the neighborhood. “There’s a lot in this neighborhood. There’s churches, there’s Dunbar High School over there, There’s low-income housing,” the resident stated. “And people still want to run and walk and jog here, so they seem to do their best, or try their best, to serve all those people. So it’s unfortunate. I feel for them and the families of the people who got injured last night.”
As of Saturday, police have not released information regarding a potential motive for the shooting. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
