TikTok’s ‘Is This Illegal?’ Trend Explained

A catchy song by Pinkpantheress is currently dominating TikTok feeds, with users embracing its unique sound for a viral trend.

The “Illegal” Trend Takes Over TikTok

The song “Illegal” by Pinkpantheress has sparked a new TikTok trend where users playfully explore relationship differences.

TikTok users are increasingly using Pinkpantheress’s song “Illegal” to illustrate contrasting aspects of relationships. While the artist states the song’s lyrical content deals with illicit drug use or male escorts, the TikTok trend uses it to highlight differences, often within a 13-second video format.

The trend typically involves two people. One person records themselves shaking hands and lip-syncing the line, “My name is Pink and I’m really glad to meet you.” Text overlays often add context, such as, “I grew up with strict parents.”

The camera then switches to the second person, who also shakes hands and mouths, “You’re recommended to me by some people.” This part of the trend is often accompanied by text revealing contrasting backgrounds, like, “I grew up with chill parents.”

The first person’s segment returns with, “Hey! OoOooOooOooo is this illegal?” This is usually followed by text indicating they are now dating.

Finally, the second person completes the trend by lip-syncing, “Hey! OoOooOooOooo it feels illegal.” This simple exchange encapsulates the entire trend.

The humor lies in the question, “is this illegal?” which implies that the pairing, despite its differences, feels so right it must be unconventional or “wrong.” For instance, creators Taylor and Sophia shared a video illustrating this with text reading, “*raised in a water only family*” followed by “*raised in an appetizer and soda family*,” concluding with the trend’s iconic phrases.

The sound has been utilized in over 841,000 TikTok videos. Notable examples include a video by Huddy with 37 million views, a video by Brooke Monk exceeding 21 million views, and even a video by Pinkpantheress herself that garnered over 36 million views, among many other viral posts featuring the sound.

TikTok’s Creator Search Insights indicates this is a top trending video, showing consistent growth since July 15. The trend, often dubbed the “illegal trend,” is predominantly searched by women aged 18 to 24, according to the platform’s data.

Some users are also employing the song outside the specific trend format, using it as background music for various clips. This includes content from individuals like a participant from Love Island.
