Northeast Michigan Gymnasts Set to Make History at AAU Junior Olympics
Three Alpena gymnasts will compete at the AAU Junior Olympics in Houston, Texas, marking a historic first for their hometown.
Brooke Smith, Callie Brousseau, and Faith Dragiewicz, a trio of Northeast Michigan seniors deeply rooted in gymnastics since childhood, are poised to represent Alpena on the national stage at the AAU Junior Olympics in Houston, Texas, next week. This marks a significant milestone as they are the first gymnasts from Alpena to achieve this distinction.
Their journey to the national competition is backed by recent triumphs. Last month, these talented seniors clinched gold medals in their respective events at the National Championships held in Florida, underscoring their exceptional skill and unwavering commitment to the sport.
What makes these gymnasts’ achievement so special? They are the first athletes from Alpena to compete at the AAU Junior Olympics, showcasing years of dedication and talent.
“The biggest thing we know, and they know this, is that gymnastics for us is not just to produce fantastic gymnasts; it is to create strong women,” stated Geri Samp, their gymnastics coach. “And I can honestly say these three girls are extremely strong, emotionally, mentally, and physically. And that is going to carry into everything they do.”
The team is slated to depart for Houston on Wednesday of next week. Their individual competitions are scheduled for the following day, where they will put their hard-earned skills to the test.
