Bill Self Released from Hospital After Second Stent Procedure in Two Years

Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self was discharged from the hospital Saturday following a procedure to insert two stents, the university announced. The Hall of Fame coach initially sought medical attention on Thursday after experiencing concerning symptoms, but expressed optimism about his recovery and the upcoming season.

Self, 62, conveyed his gratitude to the medical staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, stating, “I want to thank all the amazing doctors and nurses at LMH Health for the excellent care I received during my stay there. I feel strong and am excited to be home. Our team has had a productive summer and look forward to our batteries being recharged and prepping for this upcoming season.”

This marks the second time in just over two years that Self has undergone a stent insertion procedure. In 2023, he received two stents to address clogged arteries, forcing him to miss both the Big 12 and NCAA Tournaments. During his absence, Kansas, despite being a No. 1 seed, was upset by No. 8 seed Arkansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Prior to the 2023 procedure, Self had reported experiencing chest tightness and balance issues, leading to a heart catheterization.

Throughout his illustrious career, Self has been known for his remarkable consistency and durability. Since assuming the helm of the Kansas program in 2003-04, his only absences have been a self-imposed four-game suspension at the start of the 2022-23 season stemming from an FBI investigation into college basketball recruiting practices, and the five-game postseason absence following his 2023 catheterization.

Self’s commitment to the program is underscored by a new $53 million contract signed in 2023, making him the highest-paid coach in college basketball, with an annual salary approaching $9 million, excluding bonuses and apparel deals.

Beginning his head coaching journey in 1993 at Oral Roberts, Self has compiled an impressive 831-261 overall record. His resume boasts four Final Four appearances and two national championships, solidifying his legacy as one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history. As he prepares for the upcoming season, the focus remains on his health and the continued success of the Kansas Jayhawks.
