Manchester United Secure Vital Victory Over Sunderland, But Manager Cites Room for Improvement

A crucial 2-0 win against Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday provided a much-needed boost for Manchester United and manager Ruben Amorim, though the Portuguese coach cautioned that the performance was “good but not perfect.” Goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko alleviated mounting pressure, marking a significant upturn in form for the Red Devils.
The victory represents a marked improvement in recent results. United has now secured four wins in their last eight Premier League matches – a record of four wins, one draw, and three defeats – equaling the number of victories they achieved in their preceding 21 games (five wins, five draws, and twelve defeats). Notably, five of the ten wins under Amorim’s leadership have come against newly promoted teams.
Despite the positive result, United’s home form remains a concern. They have won three of their four home games this season but are still searching for their first win.
“Of course it is much better to win games. We were a team that was an adult team,” Amorim stated after the match. “We didn’t play the whole game well, but we had our moments and defended well. I think Senne [Lammens] did a great job and gave us confidence.”
Sesko’s Emerging Potential a Bright Spot
The performance of Benjamin Sesko was a particular highlight. After failing to find the net in his first five Premier League appearances for Manchester United, the striker has now scored in consecutive league games – mirroring a similar run he experienced with RB Leipzig between December 2024 and January 2025.
Amorim emphasized Sesko’s potential for further development. “He has the potential to do much more,” the manager added. “This is good for Ben; the small details, not just the goals. Of course he lives for goals and the media exert a lot of pressure on him to hit as a striker, but the important thing is that he was present today with every ball contact. We have to build it up, because we have to show performance in this club, but he does his job really well. He works very well and still has a lot of improvement potential.”

Sunderland Struggle in Front of Goal
For Sunderland, the defeat highlighted ongoing struggles in front of goal. The Black Cats have failed to score in three of their seven Premier League games this season, a record only surpassed by Aston Villa, who have been held scoreless four times.
Sunderland’s coach, Regis Le Bris, acknowledged the lessons learned from the match. “The main apprenticeship from this game does not define our season start,” Le Bris said. “It is a strong memory and a good lesson for us today.”
The win provides a vital morale boost for Manchester United as they navigate a challenging season, but Amorim’s assessment underscores the need for continued improvement and consistency to achieve their ambitions.
