Polish Public Opinion Shifts Towards Confrontation as Russian Incursions Escalate

A significant majority of Polish citizens support a hardline response to repeated violations of NATO airspace by Russia, according to a new poll. The findings come amid a recent surge in provocative actions by Moscow, including drone incursions into Poland and Estonian airspace, and similar incidents reported in Denmark, Norway, Germany, and Belgium.
Recent weeks have witnessed a marked increase in tensions with Russia, prompting a reassessment of security protocols and public sentiment within NATO member states. The escalating situation has fueled a debate over the appropriate response to airspace violations, with a clear trend toward a more assertive stance among the Polish populace.
Rising Support for Interception of Russian Aircraft
The IBRIS Institute of Market and Social Research, commissioned by Radio ZET, conducted a nationwide survey between September 26 and 27, 2025, polling a representative sample of 1,073 Polish citizens. The central question posed to respondents was whether NATO countries, including Poland, should shoot down Russian military aircraft violating their airspace.
The results revealed overwhelming support for such a measure. A combined 72.3 percent of respondents indicated agreement, with 38.1 percent answering “definitely yes” and 34.2 percent responding “rather yes.” Only 16.7 percent expressed opposition, split between “rather not” (12.1 percent) and “definitely not” (4.6 percent). Eleven percent of respondents stated they “didn’t know” or found the question “difficult to say.”
Political Divides and Strong Left-Wing Support
The poll also highlighted significant political divisions in opinion. According to reports, individuals identifying with leftist political views demonstrated the strongest support for a forceful response. “As many as 95 percent of people declaring support for the demands of the left is in favor of knocking Russian machines over Polish territory and other NATO countries, and only 4 percent express doubts,” Radio Zet reported.
This stark contrast underscores the growing frustration with Russia’s actions and a willingness among some segments of the population to prioritize a robust defense of NATO territory, even if it risks escalation.
Implications for NATO and Regional Security
The poll results offer a crucial insight into the evolving public mood in a key NATO member state bordering Russia and Ukraine. The strong support for a more aggressive stance could put pressure on policymakers to consider revising existing rules of engagement.
The repeated incursions into NATO airspace represent a deliberate challenge to the alliance’s collective security. While NATO has consistently emphasized its commitment to de-escalation, the increasing frequency and boldness of these incidents raise concerns about a potential miscalculation or deliberate provocation. The findings from Poland suggest a growing impatience with a purely defensive posture and a desire for a more proactive approach to deterring further Russian aggression.
