samsung’s One UI 8.5 to Tackle Spam Calls with AI-Powered Screening
Samsung is poised to considerably enhance its smartphone experience with One UI 8.5, currently in testing, and a key feature appears to be automatic call screening – a capability already popularized by Google’s Pixel devices. The update, anticipated to launch alongside the Galaxy S26 series, aims to provide a robust defense against the growing tide of spam and scam calls plaguing mobile users.
Until now, Galaxy phone users have been able to screen calls, but the process required manual intervention to approve or reject each incoming call. With One UI 8.5, Samsung intends to automate this process, allowing phones to answer and filter calls independently, offering a truly hands-free experience.
The forthcoming feature will reportedly offer a granular level of customization.Users will be able to define the types of calls subjected to screening, including all calls, unknown numbers, suspected spam or scam calls, international numbers, or those with caller ID blocked. Moreover,Samsung plans to allow call screening to remain active even when “Do Not Disturb” mode is enabled, and users will have the option to select their preferred language for call handling.
“Google and Apple already did it – now its Samsung’s turn,” one analyst noted, highlighting the industry trend toward proactive call management.
Samsung’s approach is expected to mirror Google’s Call Screen functionality, which automatically answers calls and filters them based on user-defined parameters.A video demonstrating Google’s Call Screen feature can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=. Apple introduced a similar feature with iOS 26 earlier this year, solidifying the demand for such tools. Samsung has been building toward this capability, having previously developed a voice phishing detection tool launched earlier in 2025 designed to warn users during perhaps fraudulent calls. however,One UI 8.5 aims to preemptively block these calls before they even reach the user.
beyond Call Screening: A Extensive Update
One UI 8.5 is shaping up to be more than just a minor software refresh. The update is expected to introduce a suite of new features extending beyond the improvements to call handling.
One standout upgrade is “intelligent Link Assessment,” a system designed to seamlessly switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data based on connection quality. This feature learns from user behavior and Wi-Fi performance to ensure optimal connectivity. The update will also include new, professional-grade camera features and interface design changes, positioning One UI 8.5 as one of Samsung’s most significant updates in recent memory.
In other news, phone enthusiasts can look forward to the release of “Iconic Phones” this fall. The book promises a nostalgic journey through the past 20 years of mobile technology, featuring over 20 beloved devices. Early-bird discounts are available for those who sign up today.
