Cardinals Coach Fined Over Player Confrontation
Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon faces a fine exceeding $100,000 following a sideline incident during the team’s 21-22 loss to the Tennessee Titans. The penalty isn’t related to the game’s outcome, but rather to Gannon’s physical interaction with player Emari Demercado.
Demercado appeared to score a 72-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, which would have given the Cardinals a significant lead. However, the receiver prematurely released the ball before reaching the end zone, nullifying the score. Video footage circulating online shows Gannon tackling Demercado on the sideline and, reportedly, striking him as the player attempted to move away.
“I woke up this morning and didn’t feel good about it,” Gannon stated at a press conference the following day. “I addressed this in the team meeting and apologized to Emari and the team.”
The Cardinals subsequently lost the game on a last-second field goal, marking their third consecutive defeat decided by a late kick. Prior to the final play, a defensive interception was dropped by a Cardinals player, allowing the Titans to recover and score the go-ahead touchdown.
Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Hit with $250,000 Fine for Gesture
In a separate incident, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was fined $250,000 by the NFL for making an obscene gesture during his team’s 37-22 victory over the New York Jets. Videos captured Jones displaying a middle finger during the fourth quarter of the game.
Jones downplayed the incident, describing it as “unintentional” during a radio interview. He claimed he intended to give a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans while celebrating. “I simply showed the wrong thing. That was unintentional,” he explained.
The gesture occurred after Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw his fourth touchdown pass, extending the team’s lead to 37-14 with just over four and a half minutes remaining. Jones is reportedly considering an appeal of the league’s penalty, according to an NFL spokesperson.
This is not the first time an NFL owner has faced a substantial fine for inappropriate conduct. Two years ago, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans.
