Argentine Cinema Icon Anahí Berneri Honored at Oberá Short Film Festival

Teh 22nd edition of the Oberá short Film International Film Festival is celebrating the work of Anahí Berneri, a leading figure in contemporary Argentine cinema, recognized for her powerful and thought-provoking films.
The festival, dedicated to identity and cultural diversity, is paying special tribute to Berneri’s career, highlighting her unique ability to explore the intersection of the personal and the societal. Her films – including acclaimed works like Alanis, As of You, Free Area, and Elena Knows – are lauded for their intimate portrayals of bodies, identities, and relationships, pushing boundaries in cinematic portrayal.
Berneri participated in technical talks hosted by the guayrá Entre Fronteras space, sharing her insights on plot development, storyteling, and the challenges of autonomous filmmaking. The festival’s recognition of Berneri reaffirms its commitment to showcasing cinema that engages with critical social issues and expands cultural horizons.
A Focus on Latin American Childhoods
Alongside the celebration of Berneri’s work, the festival also launched exhibitions focused on Latin American Childhoods with the feature film Natacha, directed by Fernanda Riveiz. The film centers on a group of friends competing in a science fair, attempting to prove that “Dogs see colors” despite adult skepticism. The festival aims to provide a space for family-amiable cultural experiences, with screenings of films for children and youth, and also accessible cinema with descriptive subtitles for the deaf, taking place daily at 4 p.m. at the Oberá Cinema Theater.
Wednesday’s Programming Highlights
The festival’s programming for Wednesday, the 8th, includes a range of workshops and screenings.
Faculty of Art and Design (9:00 a.m.) will host workshops on:
- Filming music: music video making with Laura Manson.
- production of animation projects: From idea to project with Agustín Álvarez.
- “From literature to cinema”: Development of scripts for children from literary adaptations with Fernanda Ribeiz.
Obera Casino (3:00 p.m.) will feature a technical talk on Filming Music: The video clip as avant-garde, development and identity with Laura Manson and Josi Guaimas.
Obera Theater Cinema (4:00 p.m.) will showcase a selection of short films under the Latin American Childhoods banner, including we are Storytellers, 39° in the shade, Speak, Carriage, and manny others.
Later in the evening,the cinema will present an International overview of non-competitive samples,followed by Competitive International and Entre Fronteras short film competitions at 8:00 p.m., featuring films like Asterion, Not Dead, and The Yellow Traffic Light. The night will conclude with a screening of A Single Spring as part of the Largos Entre Fronteras series at 10:00 p.m.
Additional screenings on Wednesday will be held at the Obera Casino Cinema, including competitive short film selections and Cine Globo’s presentation of Murga del Monte at 6:00 p.m., culminating in a live performance of Ronda at 11:59 p.m.
