Apple Unveils M5 Chip, Revamps Vision Pro in Bid to Reclaim Tech Dominance

Apple has officially launched its next-generation M5 chip alongside a refreshed lineup of devices, including the 14-inch MacBook Pro, a high-end iPad Pro, and a significantly updated Vision Pro headset. The move signals Apple’s continued commitment to its in-house silicon program and a renewed push to revitalize its presence in the burgeoning, yet challenging, spatial computing market.
The company’s ongoing development of its own silicon, known as the ‘Silicon’ program, represents a strategic shift away from Intel’s x86 architecture and towards the efficiency of ARM-based processors. Each successive generation of Apple’s custom chips has delivered improvements in integration, efficiency, and performance, and the M5 is poised to continue that trend, particularly in graphics processing and artificial intelligence acceleration – areas where Apple has recently lagged behind competitors.
Vision Pro M5: A Second Chance for Spatial Computing?
Initial sales of Apple’s first-generation Vision Pro headset fell short of expectations, a rare occurrence for the Cupertino-based tech giant. The device’s high price point – starting at $3,499 – and unique approach to virtual reality and augmented reality proved difficult to translate into mass-market appeal, despite CEO Tim Cook’s description of the product as “a pioneering product” and “experimental” for testing the AR/VR ecosystem.
However, Apple is doubling down on the technology. The M5 chip is now powering not only the updated Vision Pro but also the latest MacBook Pro and iPad Pro models, and even a professional display, in an effort to boost sales across its product lines. While a more affordable, consumer-focused version of the Vision Pro remains in development, the M5-powered refresh aims to provide an immediate performance boost.
Performance Gains and Enhanced Comfort
The updated Vision Pro leverages the increased processing power of the M5 chip, with Apple claiming up to a 50% speed increase for AI-powered system functions, such as capturing a Persona or transforming photos. Third-party applications are expected to see up to a two-fold performance improvement.
Beyond processing power, Apple has also enhanced the headset’s visual fidelity, increasing pixel rendering by 10% and enabling a refresh rate of up to 120Hz for a more immersive virtual reality experience. Addressing a key criticism of the original model, Apple has also focused on improving comfort with the introduction of a new Dual Knit Band featuring 3D-woven straps and a counterweight to reduce pressure during extended use.

The Vision Pro M5 is available for pre-order now in existing markets, maintaining the original starting price of $3,499. The device will officially ship on October 22.
