Meta Description: New research reveals the potential – and pitfalls – of using AI like Chat GPT for investment advice, comparing its performance to conventional financial advisors.
The rise of readily available artificial intelligence tools like chat GPT has extended to the realm of personal finance, offering investors 24/7 access to investment guidance – often for free. But how reliable are these AI-driven recommendations when stacked against the expertise of professional bank advisors and asset managers? A growing body of research suggests the answer is nuanced, with both opportunities and important risks.
AI Advice: Promising, But Not Yet perfect
According to Lars Hornuf, a professor of financial technology at TU Dresden, investors can benefit from using Chat GPT, but caution is paramount. “Chat GPT actually performs worse when it comes to recommendations,” Hornuf explained. “But if you provide Chat GPT with company-specific information, for example, the gap closes. The
What Recommendations Did the AI Offer?
The AI models frequently suggested large index funds from providers like Vanguard and BlackRock. When it came to individual stocks, the recommendations leaned heavily towards American tech giants – Apple, amazon, and Tesla – and also companies like Netflix that experienced considerable price gains during the study period. Cryptocurrencies and gold received comparatively little attention.
However, the study also uncovered instances of inaccurate information, described as “hallucinations.” In some cases, the AI generated nonexistent security identification numbers or constructed portfolios exceeding 100% allocation. “Most of the time, such errors are easy to spot,” researchers noted, emphasizing the importance of verifying all facts and figures. Precise input prompts and correcting obvious errors can also improve the AI’s output.
The Unexpected Advantages of AI Advice
despite the potential for errors, AI offers some advantages over traditional financial advisors. Notably,AI appears to exhibit less bias when advising women. Studies have shown that banks sometiems provide women with inferior investment recommendations compared to men with identical financial profiles.
Furthermore,AI models like chat GPT are impartial when it comes to recommending in-house funds – a common practice among bank advisors. “Chat GPT & Co. are, so to speak, impartial here,” one analyst noted.”They usually also give reasons for thier answers. That’s why they can be used well for plausibility checks.” Investors can leverage AI to scrutinize recommendations from their consultants, identifying possibly better-performing or lower-cost alternatives.
The research also suggests that Chat GPT may encourage investors to take on more risk. This is because the AI prioritizes an investor’s stated risk preference over their actual risk capacity – whether they can realistically afford to take those risks. A young investor might be able to weather market fluctuations, but a retiree may not.
will AI Replace Financial Advisors?
despite the advancements in AI, Hornuf believes financial advisors will not become obsolete. “There will always be customers who are looking for personal advice or who do not want to do online banking,” he stated. Though, he acknowledged that advisors who provide wealth management strategies grounded in both practical and scientific principles will maintain a competitive edge.
Interestingly, the study found that AI models from Asia – specifically the Chinese model “Baichuan 2” and “Solar” from South Korea – outperformed Chat GPT in generating financial advice.
Hornuf himself remains a conservative investor, favoring long-term investments in accumulating index funds. “So I invest for the long term and let it run, I don’t need any advice,” he said.
The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs), the AI systems powering these tools, is rapidly changing the financial landscape. These neural network-based systems are increasingly used for their ability to understand, process, and generate human language. While offering convenience and accessibility, investors must approach AI-driven financial advice with a critical eye, verifying information and understanding the inherent limitations of these evolving technologies.
