A Voice-first Future for Windows

A key component of this transformation is voice control. Users can now activate Copilot on Windows PCs with the simple command, “Hey Copilot.” This feature, optional by design, is indicated by a microphone symbol and accompanying audio cue. according to Microsoft, users are already demonstrating a preference for voice interaction over text when engaging with Copilot. Sessions can be ended either automatically or with the command “Goodbye.”

Copilot Vision: AI-Powered Contextual Assistance

Expanding CopilotS capabilities, the “Copilot Vision” function is now globally available across all devices supporting the AI assistant. This feature analyzes on-screen content, providing context-dependent assistance for tasks ranging from photo editing to navigating games and utilizing Office applications. Copilot can even analyse entire documents within Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with a text-in/text-out option planned for users who prefer not to use voice input.

Streamlined Access and Task Automation

Microsoft is further streamlining access to Copilot through integration directly into the Windows taskbar. A dedicated button provides fast access to both vision and voice functions,and Windows settings are now also controllable via voice command.

Looking ahead, “Copilot Actions” are being previewed through the Copilot Labs program within the Windows Insider program. This feature allows Copilot to autonomously perform tasks on the local computer, such as searching PDFs or organizing photos. Users retain full control, with the ability to observe and intervene in the process at any time.

Microsoft’s approach is notably similar to that of Manuseven, an emigrated Chinese startup whose agent, Manus, integrates directly into Windows Explorer and leverages models from Anthropic. Manus allows users to automatically create websites from local files with a simple right-click. The underlying technology, known as the “Model Context Protocol,” aims to provide system-wide access to local content. Manus is also available as a standalone application.

Expanding the Ecosystem: Gaming and Connected Services

Copilot’s reach extends beyond traditional desktop applications.Microsoft has integrated Copilot into the ROG Xbox Ally, a handheld gaming console based on Windows. Dubbed “Gaming Copilot,” the assistant responds to questions and commands without interrupting gameplay, as demonstrated in a recent showcase within the game “Minecraft,” assisting with orientation and explaining game mechanics.

For broader connectivity, “Copilot Connectors” enable access to personal data from linked services like OneDrive, outlook, Gmail, and Google Drive. Users can pose simple queries – such as “Find the details of my dentist appointment” or “Find my school assignment from Econ 201” – and directly transfer content to Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

The Copilot+ PC Distinction

While most Copilot functions will run on existing Windows 11 devices, certain features, like Zoom integration via “Click to Do,” require so-called Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft initially marketed dedicated “AI PCs” alongside Copilot but now recommends Copilot+ PCs primarily for faster processing and local AI applications.
