Norris Sets Pace at US Grand Prix Practice Amid McLaren Internal debate
The United States Grand Prix weekend kicked off with Lando Norris of McLaren setting the fastest time in the sole practice session on Friday,October 17,ahead of Saturday’s sprint Qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas. This comes on the heels of Norris’s disclosure that he faces internal “repercussions” from McLaren following a first-lap collision with teammate Oscar Piastri at the recent Singapore Grand Prix, reigniting the F1 title fight.
Norris clocked a best lap of 1:33.294, utilizing the softer tire compound. “It’s a tiny victory for practice and it gives you a little bit of confidence for Sprint Qualifying,” commented Jenson Button of Sky sports F1. The session was marked by significant track evolution, with drivers consistently improving their lap times as grip levels increased.
Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber capitalized on the evolving conditions, leaping to second place in the final moments with a time just 0.255 seconds behind norris. Championship leader Oscar Piastri, currently 22 points ahead of Norris, secured third place, 0.279 seconds off the pace. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin finished fourth, followed closely by reigning champion Max verstappen of Red Bull.
Several drivers encountered challenges during the session. Charles leclerc of ferrari was forced to abandon his final run due to gearbox issues and the distinct smell of burning oil. carlos Sainz of Williams experienced even more significant trouble, completing only nine laps before being sidelined by gearbox problems.
Despite running only the medium tire compound, George russell, fresh off signing a new contract with Mercedes, and Lewis Hamilton of ferrari finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Alex Albon showed promising pace for Williams, securing sixth position, while Isaac Hadjar of Racing Bulls and Oliver Bearman of Haas rounded out the top ten.
