Global Coalition Launches to Invest in Health Systems for Economic Growth

A new global alliance, the Health Works Leaders Coalition, has officially launched, uniting key stakeholders to prioritize investment in health systems as a driver of economic growth, job creation, and resilience.The initiative, spearheaded by The World Bank Group, the Government of japan, and the World Health Institution, aims to reach 1.5 billion peopel with quality, affordable health services by 2030.
The Coalition isn’t a direct funding source, but rather a coordinated effort to galvanize impactful health reform worldwide. This was announced during the recent World Bank Group Annual Meetings, with an initial commitment from 21 countries to develop “National Health Compacts.” These agreements will outline specific reforms, investment priorities, and accountability measures to expand access to healthcare.
National health Compacts: A Blueprint for Reform
the national Health Compacts represent a government-led approach to unlocking resources and driving change. Reform priorities already being discussed are diverse, ranging from the implementation of free health checkups and expanded health insurance coverage in Indonesia to the development of a pharmaceutical strategy in Mexico projected to create 60,000 jobs thru public-private partnerships.
the first of these compacts, representing a broad spectrum of income levels and geographic regions, are slated for formal launch at the Global Health Coverage (UHC) High-Level Forum
A Focus on Primary Care and Financial Protection
“We need to ensure that countries have the resources to invest in their health systems and futures. We must support countries to mobilize domestic resources for their health systems, especially for primary care services, and to protect the poorest from financial hardship by reducing out-of-pocket spending.”
A Collaborative Approach to Global Health
the scale of the ambition requires a unified effort. Ajay Banga,World Bank Group President,emphasized the need for collaboration. “Our goal is enterprising: to help countries deliver quality,affordable health services to 1.5 billion people by 2030. No single institution, government, or philanthropist can achieve that alone,” he saeid. “But with aligned purpose and shared effort,it is possible. If we get this right, we can make real impact – improving health, transforming lives, strengthening economies – and creating jobs. This effort is as much an ingredient of our jobs agenda as it is indeed a health initiative.”
