FBI Uncovers Extensive Illegal Operation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been investigating the complex scheme for some time, culminating in ThursdayS indictments. According to a senior official, the operation involved a large illegal gambling ring that extended beyond the realm of professional basketball.The investigation revealed two distinct but interconnected criminal activities: an illegal poker operation and alleged manipulation of NBA game outcomes for betting purposes.
Chauncey Billups has been indicted in connection with the poker operation,while Terry Rozier is accused of intentionally altering his performance during an NBA game to influence illegal wagers. Damon Jones faces charges in both cases, alongside two other individuals. U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Joseph Nocella Jr., detailed the scope of the charges during a press conference.
Poker Ring Exploited Athletes and Organized Crime
The illegal poker ring, active as early as 2019, allegedly utilized sophisticated wireless cheating technologies to rig games held in affluent locations including the Hamptons, Miami, Las Vegas, and manhattan. Victims where enticed to participate by the chance to play alongside former professional athletes, who were referred to internally as “figure cards,” while the losing players were derisively called “fish.”
According to Nocella, members of the Bonanno, Gambino, and Genovese organized crime families were also involved, profiting from the rigged games and collecting debts from losing players. The investigation suggests a deliberate effort to exploit both high-profile athletes and vulnerable gamblers.
NBA Response and immediate Suspensions
The NBA swiftly responded to the indictments, announcing the immediate suspension of both Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups from their respective teams.
“We are reviewing the federal indictments announced today,” a league statement read. “Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups will be immediately suspended from their respective teams and we will continue to cooperate with the appropriate authorities. We take these charges with the utmost seriousness and the integrity of our game remains our highest priority.”
Authorities clarified that Chauncey Billups‘ alleged involvement in the poker ring occurred while he was not coaching, but the NBA still suspended him pending the outcome of the investigation. Rozier’s alleged actions involved intentionally underperforming in a game,a direct violation of NBA rules against compromising the integrity of the sport.The investigation is ongoing, and further suspensions or penalties are expected as more data comes to light.
