Major CTA Service Disruptions Planned This Weekend for Critical Loop Track Work
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is warning commuters to plan for significant delays and service changes this weekend as crews work to replace “critical track switching equipment” at the Tower 18 junction – the busiest section of the entire CTA system. The work will necessitate the complete shutdown of four key train lines in the Loop and downtown chicago.
According to a CTA release,the Brown,Green,Orange,and Pink lines will experience suspended service beginning at 4 a.m. Saturday,lasting until 2 a.m. Monday. The agency stated the work is essential “to ensure CTA can continue providing safe and reliable services” across the four rail lines that utilize the Loop Elevated structure.
The tower 18 junction, located at the intersection of Lake and Wells streets, sees approximately 700 trains pass thru in all directions on an average weekday.This high volume of traffic underscores the urgency of the repairs, despite the substantial disruption to service.
While the Brown, Green, Orange, and Pink lines will be heavily impacted, the Red and Blue lines – which operate in subway tunnels beneath the Loop – will remain unaffected. However, the CTA cautioned that “rail service outside the loop may also be delayed,” and riders should allow for extra travel time. Furthermore,”Train Tracker data may also be impacted as well,” potentially hindering real-time service updates.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of the service changes for each affected line:
Brown Line: Service to stations including Clark/Lake, State/Lake, Washington/Wabash, Adams/Wabash, Harold Washington Library, LaSalle/Van Buren, and Quincy/Wells will be suspended. Trains will operate only between Kimball and Merchandise Mart, with the Red Line serving as an alternative route into the Loop.
Green Line: Similar to the Brown Line, service to Clark/Lake, State/Lake, Washington/Wabash, Adams/Wabash, harold Washington library, LaSalle/Van Buren, and Quincy/Wells will be suspended. Green Line trains will run only between Harlem and Clinton, and Roosevelt and 63rd Street.
Orange Line: Service disruptions will mirror those on the Brown and Green lines, with suspensions at Clark/Lake, State/Lake, Washington/Wabash, Adams/Wabash, Harold Washington Library, LaSalle/Van Buren, and Quincy/Wells.Orange Line trains will operate solely between Midway and Roosevelt.
Pink Line: Pink Line trains will be rerouted after polk Station to the Racine Blue Line station, requiring passengers to transfer to continue their journey into the Loop. Service to Ashland, Morgan, and Clinton stations will be unavailable, and passengers are advised to seek alternative transportation options, such as buses.
To mitigate the impact of these closures, the CTA will operate shuttle buses. Green and Orange Line shuttle buses will run between Roosevelt and Clinton, stopping along State, Washington, and Madison streets, connecting with continuing Green Line service at Clinton.Brown Line shuttle buses will operate between Merchandise Mart and the Harold Washington Library, serving stations near the Loop.
Along with the critical track work, crews will utilize the service disruption to perform a range of improvements at several Loop Elevated stations, including flooring and platform repairs, stairway fixes, pigeon mitigation efforts, and lighting upgrades.
