Obama Criticizes Republicans Amidst Prolonged Government Shutdown, Campaigns for Democratic Candidates
The United States continues to grapple with a month-long federal government shutdown, prompting sharp criticism from former President Barack Obama who accused Republicans of inaction and prioritizing political maneuvering over governing. The current impasse began on October 1, 2023, when lawmakers failed to agree on a spending bill to fund the government. Democrats have expressed concerns regarding potential cuts to Affordable Care Act tax credits, which could raise healthcare premiums, and reductions to Medicaid funding, potentially leaving individuals without coverage.
During a rally in Norfolk, Virginia, campaigning for former Representative Abigail Spanberger, now a Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Obama stated, “The government is shut down and the Republicans who currently are in charge of Congress, they’re not even pretending to solve the problem.” He further questioned their commitment to their duties, asking, “They have not even been showing up to work, not in session. Where are you? What are you doing?”
Republicans, however, have placed the blame squarely on Democrats. Former President Donald Trump recently labeled his political opponents as “crazed lunatics,” and echoed similar sentiments this week, stating, “The shutdown proceeds because the Democrats just don’t know what they’re doing.” He continued, asserting that a simple agreement from Democrats would swiftly resolve the situation.
Trump also advocated for eliminating the filibuster, warning Republicans on his Truth Social platform that Democrats would abolish it “the first chance they get,” potentially leading to the packing of the Supreme Court and the addition of new states. He urged his party to “FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT! WIN, WIN, WIN!” and to end what he termed an “Extortionist Shutdown.”
Obama refrained from directly addressing Democrats’ role in the shutdown during his Saturday appearances, but delivered a scathing critique of Trump and his administration. “Our country and our politics are in a pretty dark place right now,” he charged. “It’s hard to know where to start, because every day this White House offers up a fresh batch of lawlessness and recklessness and mean-spiritedness and just plain craziness.”
The former president likened the current political climate to “every day is Halloween. Except it’s all tricks and no treats,” acknowledging that the situation was even more dire than he had anticipated. He argued that while the economy may have benefited Trump’s “billionaire pals,” average Americans have not experienced corresponding improvements in their financial well-being.

Addressing a crowd in Newark, New Jersey, while supporting Democratic gubernatorial candidate Representative Mikie Sherrill, Obama praised her background as a Navy helicopter pilot, lawyer, and federal prosecutor. He emphasized her dedication to public service, stating, “I don’t know many people who started their careers…keeping communities safe…And she’s doing this while raising four kids.” He concluded that Sherrill embodies the leadership New Jersey needs.
