Regret You: Worst Halloween in 31 Years?

halloween Box Office Battle: ‘Regretting You’ and ‘Black Phone 2’ Vie for Top Spot Amidst Record Lows

A fierce competition for the No. 1 spot at the Halloween box office, coupled with the lowest-grossing Halloween weekend in 31 years, paints a concerning picture for the film industry.

The battle for box office supremacy this Halloween weekend is proving to be a nail-biter,with both Paramount and Constantin Films’ romance-drama Regretting You and blumhouse’s horror sequel Black Phone 2 claiming the top position. Initial Sunday estimates from Paramount placed Regretting You at No. 1 with $8.1 million from 3,245 cinemas in its second weekend, but Universal is countering with $7.3 million for Black Phone 2 from 2,663 locations.

A Record Low for Halloween ticket Sales

The box office contest is unfolding against a backdrop of historically low ticket sales. Overall revenue for the weekend reached just $49.8 million – the worst showing of the year to date. More alarmingly, this marks the lowest-grossing Halloween weekend in 31 years, excluding 2020 when theaters were largely shuttered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Comscore, the last time Halloween weekend revenue was lower was in 1993,when combined ticket sales reached $49.2 million (not adjusted for inflation).

“But that’s not the most frightening fact,” a senior official stated. The downturn follows the worst October for movie ticket sales in 27 years, largely attributed to a lack of major blockbuster releases. Unlike previous years, such as 2023 with Venom: The Last Dance, exhibitors were forced to rely on holdovers, rereleases like Back to the Future, and smaller releases such as Focus Features’ Bugonia.

Impact of friday’s Holiday on ‘Regretting You’

The timing of Halloween falling on a Friday proved notably challenging for Regretting You,a film geared towards a younger female audience. According to reports, the film experienced a notable dip in sales on Friday as its target demographic was occupied with Halloween festivities. However, sales rebounded dramatically on Saturday, spiking 200 percent.

through its first 10 days in theaters, Regretting You has earned $27.5 million domestically and $23.3 million internationally, bringing its global total to $50.8 million.

‘Black Phone 2’ Continues Strong Performance

Black Phone 2 continues to be a success for Blumhouse, surpassing the $104 million mark over the weekend. The horror sequel has now grossed $61.5 million domestically and $43.3 million internationally, with a weekend haul of $7.3 million.

Other Notable Releases

The acclaimed Japanese manga adaptation, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, experienced a steep decline in its second weekend, dropping 67 percent to $6 million. Despite the drop, the film has earned a domestic total of $30.8 million and a global tally of $139 million. Sony’s Crunchyroll division is handling the film’s distribution in the U.S. and several foreign markets, excluding Japan, accounting for $87.4 million of the global gross.

Bugonia, from Focus Features, secured the No. 4 spot with $4.8 million as it expanded to 2,043 theaters – the widest release ever for a film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The film stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

The current state of the box office underscores the industry’s reliance on a consistent stream of high-profile releases to drive attendance. With the Halloween weekend proving to be a significant disappointment, Hollywood faces renewed pressure to deliver compelling content to lure audiences back to theaters.
