WhatsApp Officially Launches Apple Watch App, Expanding Wearable Access
Meta’s popular messaging platform, WhatsApp, is now available on the Apple Watch with a dedicated WatchOS app, offering users enhanced access to chats, voice messages, and call notifications. The launch, announced in a Tuesday blog post, marks a significant expansion of WhatsApp’s presence in the wearable technology market.
The new app addresses a previous limitation for Apple Watch users, who were previously restricted to replying to messages only after receiving a notification. Now, users can proactively send and receive messages, as well as access message history, directly from their wrist. According to a company release, the app will also support sending images and stickers, all while maintaining WhatsApp’s signature end-to-end encryption for secure conversations.
The WhatsApp Apple Watch app is compatible with the Apple Watch Series 4 and later models, provided the watch is running WatchOS 10 or newer. This requirement means older devices, such as the first-generation Apple Watch SE, will not be able to utilize the new functionality. “I’m glad the chat service will be available to many of us who haven’t recently upgraded to a newer Apple Watch,” one user commented, highlighting the accessibility benefit for a wider range of Apple Watch owners.
WhatsApp’s move into the Apple Watch ecosystem follows its successful launch of a WearOS app in 2023, bringing the service to Android-powered smartwatches like the Google Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch. Notably, Facebook Messenger, also owned by Meta, discontinued its Apple Watch app in 2023.
WhatsApp views this initial Apple Watch release as the foundation for a more robust chat experience on wearable devices. However, a company representative told CNET that the current iteration of the app requires a connected iPhone to function, and cellular connectivity on the Apple Watch will not allow for independent operation when the paired iPhone is powered off. This differs from WhatsApp’s Linked Devices feature, which allows access across multiple devices even without the primary phone being online.
The launch underscores WhatsApp’s commitment to expanding its reach and functionality across various platforms, catering to the growing demand for seamless communication experiences on the go.
