The remains were identified as belonging to William Mitchell, 87, and another unidentified man. The prosecution alleges that Mitchell’s body “showed obvious signs of decomposition” after reportedly being held in the uncooled mortuary room for 36 days. This alleged neglect is especially poignant given that Mitchell had meticulously planned and pre-paid for his own funeral arrangements.
Elkin allegedly claimed to police that the cremation had not occurred due to a lack of payment. However, the prosecution presented evidence indicating that Mitchell had a pre-paid funeral plan and that the defendants had already received £2,040 for the cremation services.Furthermore, they had not even ordered a coffin for Mitchell, leaving his family “incredulous” upon learning from police that his body remained uncremated.
