A controversial new nativity scene on Brussels’ Grand-Place has ignited a firestorm of criticism, wiht residents, politicians, and public figures decrying the display as a departure from tradition and a misrepresentation of the Christmas spirit. The installation, titled “Nativity Fabrics,” replaces the classic wooden crèche with faceless, patchwork figures, prompting accusations of insensitivity and sparking a broader debate about cultural heritage.
The controversy began several days ago,quickly escalating on social media platforms as images of the contemporary nativity scene circulated. Many users expressed dismay at the abstract design, arguing it was unsuitable for such an iconic location.
Political Fallout and Calls for Change
The debate has quickly become politicized, with various factions weighing in on the matter. Mourad Maimouni, a municipal councilor representing team Fouad Ahidar (TFA), is set to challenge the City council this Monday, demanding a return to the traditional crèche.”Christmas remains a party marked by an important cultural and religious dimension in Belgian heritage,” Maimouni stated.
The MR party has launched an online petition calling for the “immediate replacement” of the display, or at the very least, a reversion to the traditional scene for next year’s edition. According to the petition,”An inclusive society is a society that brings people together,and Christmas is the ultimate holiday that brings people together. however, these faceless characters look more like a tribute to the zombies that can be found near Brussels train stations than a nativity scene, and in no way represent the spirit of Christmas.”
Though, the MR’s stance has drawn accusations of hypocrisy, with some pointing out the party’s presence within the City’s governing coalition. David Weytsman, the MR group leader, clarified in an interview with 21News that “the new nursery project was launched before our majority arrived.”

The criticism extends beyond the political sphere.Eric Domb, the owner of Pairi Daiza, a prominent Belgian zoo, voiced his disapproval in a lengthy Facebook post, asserting that “Christmas is not a legacy to hide.” This sentiment reflects a broader concern that the new display diminishes the cultural and religious significance of the holiday.
The “Nativity Fabrics” installation features rag characters devoid of faces, thier features replaced by a patchwork of brown and beige colors. This modern interpretation stands in stark contrast to the traditional wooden nativity scenes that have graced the grand-Place for years.
A History of Vandalism and Disrespect
This is not the first time the Brussels nativity scene has been targeted. The display has a history of attracting unwanted attention, including acts of vandalism and theft. In 2017, the figurine of the infant Jesus disappeared and was never recovered. In 2014, activists removed the head of the divine child as part of a political protest.
Perhaps the most notable incident occurred in 2015,when three individuals – aged 20,21,and 24 – vandalized the crèche,stealing the Jesus doll,damaging fir trees,removing tiles,and breaking part of the frame.
