Citroën is making a bold entry into the world of all-electric racing with a powerhouse driver lineup and a launch steeped in its Parisian heritage, signaling a serious commitment to the future of Formula E. The iconic french brand will join the Season 12 grid in São Paulo, Brazil, this weekend, marking a significant milestone for both the manufacturer and the championship.
A New Era for Citroën in All-Electric Racing
The São Paulo E-Prix, kicking off on Friday, December 5th with Free Practice 1 and culminating in the race on Saturday, December 6th, will be Citroën’s first competitive outing in Formula E. The team has made a splash by signing Jean-Eric Vergne, a two-time formula E champion, and Nick Cassidy, an 11-time race winner. This strategic move immediately positions citroën as a contender amongst established teams like Porsche,Nissan,Mahindra, and Jaguar.
Driver Powerhouse: Vergne and Cassidy Lead the Charge
citroën is confident in its driver pairing, with a senior official stating, “I adore them. Good Energy attracts good energy.” Vergne, affectionately known as “JEV,” already has a strong connection to the Stellantis motorsport family, having previously won a championship with the DS brand. His back-to-back championship wins underscore his extraordinary talent and dedication to the sport.
Cassidy’s recent performance is equally notable.”Nick has done an excellent job these last three seasons,” a team representative noted. “he’s been second, third and second [in the drivers’ standings]. He’s won the last three races and he’s in a great moment.” The team recognizes his technical expertise as invaluable, particularly in the development of the GEN4 car. “Having a driver that can help you develop the car is worth its weight in gold, and he’s a great driver.”
Parisian Roots and a Grand Launch
Citroën’s launch event in Paris was a vibrant affair, reflecting the brand’s deep connection to the city. Unlike the restrictive approach encountered with Formula 1, Formula E has welcomed Citroën’s creative vision.”formula E is like ‘yes of course, let’s do fun things and bring people to the track’. It’s very good. Formula 1 was a bit the contrary, saying ‘you can’t do this and you can’t do that’.”
Citroën’s entry into Formula E is more than just a branding exercise; it’s a strategic investment in the future of motorsport and a testament to the brand’s commitment to electric mobility. As Season 12 gets underway in São Paulo, all eyes will be on Citroën to see if they can live up to the considerable hype surrounding their arrival.
