Meta Launches New AI-Powered Security Hub for Facebook and Instagram
Meta is rolling out a centralized security hub for Facebook and Instagram, aiming to improve account protection and address past shortcomings in its support tools. The company acknowledged that its previous support systems haven’t “always met expectations,” but affirmed its commitment to providing a better experience for its users.
Enhanced Security Features Now Available
The new hub consolidates Meta’s support tools into a single location, allowing users to manage critical account settings. This includes the ability to lock down accounts, change passwords, control service accessibility, and access personalized security recommendations. The rollout is currently underway for both Android and iOS devices, though support for other Meta services like Messenger, Threads, and WhatsApp has not been announced.
A key component of the update is the introduction of an AI-powered support assistant. According to a company release, the assistant will be available to help users with account recovery, settings updates, and profile management. Initial testing will focus on Facebook, with plans to expand the assistant’s availability to other apps in the future.
Meta is also leveraging AI to proactively identify and address potentially “risky” account activity. The brand claims the AI will enhance the effectiveness of SMS and email alerts, though it remains unclear whether this will result in an increase in notifications or a more sophisticated system for distinguishing between legitimate and malicious activity.
Improved Account Recovery and Device Recognition
Alongside the new hub and AI tools, Meta has also improved its trusted device recognition capabilities. “Our systems recognize the device you usually use and familiar locations better than ever,” the company stated.
If an account is compromised, access to the new support hub will be lost, requiring users to utilize Meta’s existing account recovery process via a dedicated website. However, Meta assures users that this process has been streamlined with “clearer guidance and simpler verification.” New recovery methods include the option to submit an optional selfie video for identity verification.
While the hub offers enhanced security features, it’s important to note that access requires being logged into your account. If an account is overtaken by a malicious actor, the standard recovery process will need to be followed.
