Dean Butler Reflects on ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Legacy, Melissa Gilbert, and a Changing Perspective on On-Screen Romance
All nine seasons of the beloved series Little House on the prairie are currently available for streaming on both Prime Video and Peacock, offering a renewed possibility to revisit the enduring story of the Ingalls family.
dean Butler, now 69, fondly remembers his time on the iconic series, especially his connection with co-star Melissa Gilbert, 61.Butler joined the cast in 1979 as Almanzo Wilder, eventually marrying Gilbert’s character, Laura Ingalls, and has recently been reconnecting with fans and fellow cast members through the new documentary, Little House Homecoming.
“America loved Laura – Melissa Gilbert – who embodied plucky, spirited in-your-face candor,” Butler shared with PEOPLE. “When lots of young people, adults are watching this, and they love Laura, and they see her, they see her fall in this lovely way, in this lovely innocent way that she did.”
Butler’s character, affectionately known as “Manly” by Laura, captured the attention of other young women in Walnut Grove, but it was Laura’s genuine spirit that truly resonated with audiences. “She was so real and so irresistible because of that.”
He continued, “You couldn’t not love her and wanna follow whatever she was going to be doing in any story that you were watching.” Butler felt privileged to be a part of Laura’s character arc, representing her maturation and evolution. “That’s a special thing for me to be in a really nice way attached to that, as I became the maturing of Laura.Her energy went from, and she always loved Pa, he was never gonna be replaced, but she moved to it, as we all do, we evolved beyond,” he shared. “she evolved beyond sitting on Pa’s lap, and with the pigtails and the lovely moments that they had together.There was going to be something else. It was great to be a part of that.”
However, a recent reflection on the show’s dynamics has brought a new layer of complexity to the narrative. In April 2024, during a discussion with PEOPLE commemorating the 50th anniversary of little House on the Prairie, Butler addressed the significant age gap between himself and Gilbert when their characters first connected in season 6. He was 23, while Gilbert was only 15. Their characters shared their first on-screen kiss in the episode “Sweet sixteen.”
At the time, Butler described Gilbert as “a little girl: bright, incredibly capable, spunky, vibrant, very extroverted.” He acknowledged the challenge of portraying a developing romance with someone so young and praised her ability to navigate the situation with maturity.
However, Gilbert recently expressed a different perspective. She revealed on Instagram that seeing photos of herself at 15 alongside her much-older on-screen love interest now leaves her “nauseated.” she stated that she is disturbed by the expectation that her teenage self was supposed to “fall in love with” and kiss a man several years her senior.
“Through the lens of today, this is shocking,” she wrote, adding that she was grateful for the support of those on set, including Landon, who helped ensure her safety.
the documentary Little House Homecoming brings together Butler and other original cast members – Karen Grassle (Caroline Ingalls), Alison Arngrim (nellie Oleson), Charlotte Stewart (miss Beadle), and Wendi Lou Lee (Baby Grace) – as they revisit the locations that inspired the beloved books and celebrate the enduring legacy of Little House. The film highlights the places Laura called home, from the Big Woods to Missouri, and features insights from museum directors and researchers dedicated to preserving Laura Ingalls Wilder’s story.
