The final qualifying hour of the 2025 Formula 1 season has delivered a thrilling prelude to tomorrow’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with Max verstappen securing pole position amidst a fiercely contested battle for the Drivers’ Championship. Norris demonstrated early pace, topping the timing sheets in both FP1 and FP2. However, it was George Russell who set the benchmark in the final practice hour, followed closely by Norris and Verstappen, foreshadowing a tight qualifying session.

The first segment of qualifying saw the Alpine duo of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto lead the field onto the circuit. Q2 began with Verstappen leading the field, setting an initial benchmark of 1:22.912 on used C5 tires. Russell quickly responded with a 1:22.730 on a new set of soft tires, briefly taking the top spot.The McLarens followed,with Piastri and Norris both setting competitive times on used rubber.
A late flurry of laps saw Russell maintain his lead, followed by Verstappen, Norris, and Piastri. The bottom five – Oliver Bearman, Carlos Sainz Jr., Liam Lawson, Kimi Antonelli, and Lance Stroll – were eliminated, setting the stage for a dramatic Q3.

The final segment of qualifying proved to be a nail-biting affair. Red Bull strategically deployed Yuki Tsunoda to provide Verstappen with a crucial tow, hoping to maximize aerodynamic efficiency. Verstappen’s first flying lap was a stunning 1:22.295, setting a formidable target. Norris responded with a 1:22.751, but it was set on used tires. Piastri followed with a 1:22.622, also on scrubbed softs, slotting into second.
With just minutes remaining, Red bull sent Tsunoda out again, and Mercedes requested Russell to position himself behind Verstappen for a potential tow. The tension was palpable as Piastri and Norris engaged in a strategic battle, potentially attempting a team game.
Piastri initially closed the gap,finishing the first sector just 0.049 seconds behind Verstappen’s phenomenal time. Norris was also strong, but ultimately, it was Verstappen who claimed pole position with a blistering lap of 1:22.295. Norris secured second with a 1:22.408, and Piastri will start third with a 1:22.437.
