After 20 years of success, Red Bull Racing and Helmut marko are officially parting ways, marking the end of an era for the Formula 1 team and the celebrated Austrian motorsport consultant. The agreement, reached at the end of the year, sees Marko voluntarily resigning from a contract that extended through 2026.
Red Bull and Marko, 82, achieved remarkable success together, securing 14 world championship titles – eight drivers’ championships and six constructors’ championships. The decision follows internal discussions regarding the team’s future, particularly after the departure of team principal Christian Horner in July.
A Legacy of Championship Success
Marko was instrumental in building Red Bull Racing from its inception in 2005. He is credited with identifying and nurturing some of the sport’s biggest talents, including Max Verstappen and Sebastian vettel, both of whom went on to become world champions driving for the team. Both drivers have repeatedly acknowledged the profound impact Marko had on their careers.
“Marko was the racing team’s first employee in 2005 and discovered Max Verstappen and sebastian Vettel,” a company release stated. “both drivers became world champions in the team’s 20-year history.”
Generous Severance Package signals Respect
Despite increasing scrutiny, Red Bull is honoring Marko’s contributions with a substantial severance package. According to information from Bild, the team will pay Marko his full annual salary for 2026, amounting to approximately ten million euros. This “golden handshake” underscores the team’s recognition of his decades of service and achievements.
Anticipating Change and Looking Ahead
The separation appears to be a proactive move by Marko, who anticipated internal deliberations about the team’s direction following Horner’s exit. A senior official stated that a “complete restart” was discussed internally, prompting marko to take the initiative and resign.
With Marko’s departure, Red Bull will now embark on a new chapter, seeking to build upon its legacy of success with a revamped team structure. The end of this collaboration officially concludes Helmut Marko’s Formula 1 career, leaving a meaningful void in the paddock and a lasting impact on the sport.
