Newcastle University Leads the Charge in Innovative Treatment
A recent trial, spearheaded by Newcastle University and partially funded by the RNID – the national charity for deaf people – has demonstrated promising results. The study involved 77 individuals and explored a novel approach to disrupting the neural patterns associated with tinnitus. Researchers developed a therapy involving modified sounds designed to quiet the intrusive noises.
“At the moment, there aren’t really very good treatments to get rid of the tinnitus sound, and it’s all about helping people disengage and learn to live better with the symptom,” explained a consultant neurologist and researcher at Newcastle University. The team made subtle alterations to synthetic musical notes for one group of participants, while another group received placebo sounds with modified frequencies.
How the Therapy Works: Disrupting Neural Synchrony
The therapy hinges on the idea that tinnitus arises from spontaneous activity in brain cells within the hearing pathway. These cells, when deprived of sufficient input due to hearing loss, noise exposure, or aging, can begin to fire rhythmically in unison, creating the perception of sound. The researcher likened this “synchrony” to a crowd at a football match, all chanting at the same time.
The modified sounds are designed to disrupt this synchrony, activating neurons at slightly different times, effectively breaking up the coordinated firing pattern. “We’re just activating them at slightly different times to each other, rather than all together,” the researcher clarified.
Significant Quieting Observed in Trial Participants
The results of the trial were encouraging. Participants listening to the modified sounds experienced, on average, a 10% reduction in their tinnitus, and this improvement lasted for approximately three weeks after the treatment concluded. The study found a statistically significant difference between those receiving the active therapy and those receiving the placebo.
Researchers are now exploring the possibility of applying this technique to everyday sounds, such as music, talk radio, and podcasts. “This could be done to everyday sounds like music, which is our later ambition,” the researcher stated. The potential for integration into existing listening habits is a key advantage, as it could allow individuals to accumulate hours of therapeutic listening throughout the day.
Accessibility and Future Development
One of the most appealing aspects of this therapy is its potential for widespread accessibility. Because it doesn’t require specialized hardware, it could be delivered through a simple smartphone app or website. “One of the nice things is, if it does work, it doesn’t need special hardware. It could be built into people’s ordinary, everyday lives and listening experience,” the researcher noted.
Further research is planned to explore different sound modifications and listening durations. The team is also investigating the possibility of tailoring the therapy to individual tinnitus frequencies.
Ralph Holme, director of research at RNID, hailed the development as “a highly promising development” in the search for tinnitus treatments. He emphasized that while current therapies focus on management, this new method targets the source of the perception itself. “And because the therapy has the potential to be rolled out with relative ease, in the future, people could access treatment with just a few swipes of their smartphone,” Holme added.
While still in its early stages, this research offers a tangible sense of optimism for the millions who live with the daily challenge of tinnitus, suggesting a future where relief may be just an app download away.
