The US Treasury Department on Thursday imposed sanctions on three nephews of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, his wife Cilia Flores, and several entities linked to illicit oil revenue, escalating tensions in the ongoing political conflict with the Venezuelan regime.the move follows the seizure of an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast earlier this week and signals a hardening of Washington’s stance against the Maduro government.
The sanctions aim to disrupt the financial networks supporting the Maduro regime and address concerns over drug trafficking and illicit oil trade. This latest action underscores the US commitment to holding accountable those allegedly involved in undermining venezuela’s democratic institutions and fueling regional instability.
‘Narco-Nephews’ Face Financial Blockade
The three nephews – Franqui Flores, Carlos Flores, and Efraín Campo – are widely known in Venezuela as the “narco-nephews” due to their past involvement in drug trafficking. All three have been denied access to any property or financial assets held within the United States. Moreover, US companies and citizens are now prohibited from conducting business with them, facing potential penalties for non-compliance.
This isn’t the first time some of these individuals have faced US sanctions. Flores was previously sanctioned in July 2017, but was removed from the Treasury’s list in 2022 during the Biden management as part of an effort to encourage negotiations for democratic elections in Venezuela. Flores and Campo previously served jail time in the US on narcotics convictions.
Broader sanctions Net Expands
Beyond the Maduro family members, the sanctions list includes Panamanian businessman Ramón Carretero, six firms, and six Venezuela-flagged ships. The Treasury Department alleges that Carretero has engaged in business dealings with the Maduro family and facilitated oil shipments on behalf of the Venezuelan government. These entities are accused of transporting Venezuelan oil, circumventing existing sanctions and providing financial support to the regime.
“Nicolas Maduro and his criminal associates in Venezuela are flooding the United States with drugs that are poisoning the American people,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated. “Under President Trump’s leadership, Treasury is holding the regime and it’s circle of cronies and companies accountable for its continued crimes.”
Tanker Seizures and Military Buildup
The sanctions come on the heels of Wednesday’s seizure of an oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast – the first of its kind targeting a Venezuelan oil cargo or tanker. Sources familiar with the matter indicate the US is preparing to seize additional oil tankers from Venezuela. This action coincides with a reported large military buildup by the Trump administration in the Caribbean.
When questioned about potential future tanker seizures,White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt declined to comment, instead emphasizing the significance of the sanctions package. “We’re not going to stand by and watch sanctioned vessels sail the seas with black market oil, the proceeds of which will fuel narcoterrorism of rogue and illegitimate regimes around the world,” Leavitt said.
Impact on Venezuelan Economy
A important reduction or complete halt in Venezuelan oil exports would undoubtedly place considerable strain on the Maduro government’s finances. Oil revenue remains a critical source of income for the regime, and disrupting this flow could further exacerbate the country’s already dire economic situation.
