Southwest Airlines Announces Major Austin Expansion, Bringing 2,000 Jobs and $8.4 Million Investment
Austin residents will soon have access to more flights and increased economic opportunity as Southwest Airlines expands its presence at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). The Austin City Council on Thursday approved a landmark economic development agreement with the airline, signaling one of the largest job-growth commitments the city has seen in recent years.
A Boost for Austin’s Economy and Workforce
The expansion, celebrated at a news conference attended by state and city leaders including Governor Greg Abbott and Mayor Kirk Watson, will see Southwest establish a full crew base and relocate its Command Center to AUS. The project represents a total investment exceeding $8.4 million in airport improvements. According to a company release, this strategic move is projected to create 2,000 new full-time positions while simultaneously retaining 840 existing roles.
“We’re building lives and careers at the same time we’re building tarmacs and terminals,” Watson stated, emphasizing the holistic benefits of the agreement. “Southwest is choosing Austin because our people, our workforce, and our future make us a smart investment.”
Governor Abbott echoed this sentiment, noting that “Southwest Airlines was born and raised in Texas and has been a core element of the economic growth we have seen in our state.” He further announced that the airline will be adding “over 2,000 high paying jobs right here in Texas,” reinforcing the state’s position as a hub for economic opportunity.
Improved Passenger Experience and Airport Operations
Beyond job creation, the expansion promises significant improvements to the passenger experience at AUS. Southwest’s increased staffing levels, strengthened on-site command capabilities, and improved aircraft availability are expected to boost flight reliability, reduce disruptions, and support the addition of new nonstop routes. The airline’s investment in new infrastructure will also contribute to long-term airport capacity, all without any upfront cost to the city.

Incentives and Community Benefits
The agreement authorizes up to $5.5 million in incentives over five years, but these payments are contingent upon Southwest meeting annual compliance standards and creating the promised Austin jobs. A notable 10% of each incentive payment will be directed to the City’s Childcare Assistance Reserve Fund, marking a significant first contribution to a program dedicated to supporting childcare affordability for working families.
Importantly, the deal includes no upfront subsidies, tax abatements, or automatic payouts. All incentives are capped and directly tied to job creation and community benefits, ensuring fiscal responsibility and protecting taxpayer dollars. The expansion also mandates workforce and community benefits, including partnerships to promote aviation career awareness in K–12 schools, career exploration programs, skills-based training, and paid internships for high school students. Ongoing volunteerism and support for local nonprofits and schools are also required.
Ghizlane Badawi, CEO of AUS, expressed excitement about Southwest becoming the anchor tenant for the future Concourse B, stating that the announcement is “about creating thousands of high-quality, high-wage jobs for Austinites and fueling long-term economic growth for our region.” All new positions will offer a minimum wage of $22.05 per hour, along with comprehensive health benefits for spouses, domestic partners, and dependents.
