Scientists Challenge Classification of ‘Little Foot’ Fossil, Suggesting a New Human Ancestor
A groundbreaking new study casts doubt on the long-held classification of the “Little Foot” fossil, potentially revealing a previously unknown species in the human evolutionary tree. The research, led by scientists from the University of Cambridge and La Trobe University, suggests the fossil does not neatly fit into existing categories of early hominins.
The remarkably complete Little Foot fossil – formally known as StW 573 – was first discovered in 1994 within the Sterkfontein caves in central South Africa. Named for the small foot bones initially identified in a collection of animal fossils, the specimen has been a source of intense scientific debate for decades.
A History of Debate Surrounding Little Foot
In the 2010s, paleoanthropologist Ronald Clarke proposed that Little Foot belonged to Australopithecus prometheus. However, other researchers argued for its classification as Australopithecus africanus, a species first described in 1925 by Australian anatomist Raymond Dart and already known from the Sterkfontein site and broader South Africa.
But the new research, published in the December 2025 issue of the American Journal of Biological Anthropology, challenges both of these classifications. Researchers, including Dr. Jesse Martin of La Trobe University, found that Little Foot lacks the unique combination of traits characteristic of either A. prometheus or A. africanus.
“This fossil remains one of the most important discoveries in the hominin record and its true identity is key to understanding our evolutionary past,” Dr. Martin stated. “We think it’s demonstrably not the case that it’s Australopithecus prometheus or Australopithecus africanus. This is more likely a previously unidentified, human relative.”
Evidence Points to a Unique Species
The study’s findings suggest that Little Foot may represent a distinct species altogether, potentially resolving a long-standing debate about the diversity of hominins at Sterkfontein. According to one researcher, “Little Foot demonstrates in all likelihood he’s right about that. There are two species” present at the site, acknowledging Dr. Clarke’s earlier assertion of multiple hominin species coexisting in the area.
The implications of this research are significant. Professor Andy Herries, a researcher at La Trobe University and the University of Johannesburg, emphasized the fossil’s importance, stating, “Little Foot was one of the most complete and important fossils ever discovered in terms of what it could tell us about early human diversity and how our ancestors adapted to the different environments of southern Africa.” He also noted that the original classification of A. prometheus was based on the now-discredited idea that these early humans controlled fire.
Future Research Will Define Little Foot’s Place in the Family Tree
The research team now plans to further investigate Little Foot’s characteristics to definitively determine its species and its position within the complex human family tree. This includes detailed comparative analyses with other hominin fossils and a re-evaluation of the Sterkfontein cave site.
The authors acknowledge the contributions of those who came before them, with one researcher stating, “Dr. Clarke deserves credit for the discovery of Little Foot, and being one of the only people to maintain there were two species of hominin at Sterkfontein.”
Ultimately, unraveling the mystery of Little Foot promises to provide crucial insights into the origins and evolution of humankind.
