Spielberg and Affleck: The Untold Story Behind Hollywood’s Most Unlikely Feud

A decades-long professional distance between two of Hollywood’s biggest names – Steven Spielberg and Ben Affleck – may stem from a deeply personal and surprisingly contentious incident, according to a recent account. While the two have never collaborated on a film, a story circulating online suggests a long-held animosity fueled by a poolside clash and professional concerns.

The origins of this alleged rift were recounted by writer and director Mike Binder during an appearance on the One Bad Movie podcast with Stephen Baldwin. Binder detailed how Spielberg initially agreed to direct his 2006 film, Man About Town, but ultimately backed out due to reservations about casting Affleck in the lead role.

According to Binder, Spielberg expressed concerns over Affleck’s recent box office performance and his highly publicized relationship with Jennifer Lopez at the time. “We make a deal, he’s gonna do it. We shake hands,” Binder recalled. “I call Steven, Steven says, ‘No. You can’t do it with him. We just bombed with a movie with him; he’s got that whole J.Lo thing going on now, and I have other problems with him.’”

However, the professional concerns were reportedly layered with a personal grievance. The “other problems,” Binder claims, stemmed from an incident during a vacation in Spain involving Affleck and Spielberg’s goddaughter, Gwyneth Paltrow, during their relationship between 1997 and 2000.

Spielberg allegedly told Binder a story about a young son being upset by Affleck. “My son was a little boy, playing in the pool. And he got out of the pool, and Ben came in fully dressed, and my son pushed Ben into the pool,” Spielberg purportedly said. “Ben got really mad at him, and he came out of the pool, and he picked him up, and he threw him back into the pool, and made my son cry.”

Binder, understandably perplexed, asked Spielberg what relevance the anecdote had to the casting decision. The director’s response was blunt: “I just don’t like to work with him, plus his last two movies bombed. Find somebody else. Anyone but him. He’s cold as hell.” Binder then received a direct inquiry from Affleck himself. “Ben called me up, and he goes, ‘Did Steven Spielberg tell you I threw his kid in the water? Is that what happened? Is that why I’m not in your movie?’”

Following Spielberg’s withdrawal, Binder ultimately took the project to Lionsgate and directed Man About Town himself, with Affleck still in the starring role. The film, however, was critically panned and performed poorly at the box office. The story, currently gaining traction on platforms like X and Reddit, remains unconfirmed by any of the parties involved. Despite the lack of public comment from Affleck, Spielberg, or Paltrow, the fact remains that the two directors have never collaborated professionally.

However, the narrative doesn’t end with animosity. Binder claims the two seemingly reconciled in 2013 when Affleck’s Argo won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, beating out Spielberg’s Lincoln. Photographic evidence confirms a handshake between Spielberg and Affleck that evening. More recently, Affleck described Spielberg as “one of the great filmmaking architects to ever live” in an interview with GQ. This suggests that, despite a potentially rocky past, the two industry titans have reached a place of mutual respect and professional camaraderie.
