A powerful story of resilience and support is unfolding within Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” documentary on Disney+, as backup singer Jeslyn Gorman’s battle with cancer and triumphant return to the stage is revealed. While undergoing treatment, Gorman remained connected to the tour through livestreams, enthusiastically cheering on her colleagues from afar. After six months, a cell phone video captured the poignant moment Gorman rang the bell signifying the end of her treatment. Demonstrating remarkable resolve, she immediately boarded a plane to rejoin the cast in Sydney, Australia.
“I cannot believe that she was back in a few months,” Swift expressed. “The will to come back and do the hardest show ever. None of us could believe it. I still can’t.”
The tour became a source of strength for Gorman, with a member of Swift’s crew delivering motivational messages to the band and dancers each night. Gorman expressed gratitude for the team’s unwavering support, acknowledging their willingness to “see” her, support her, and create space for her during her absence. She recalled a particularly vulnerable moment – tripping outside Swift’s birthday party while experiencing treatment side effects – and how Swift publicly introduced her as, “Guys, this is Jeslyn. We sing together.”
Gorman emphasized the significance of Swift’s phrasing, noting that it transcended the label of “backup singer.” “No one says that,” Gorman remarked. “And I think that just says something about who you are and how humble you are, and how you like to shed light on people and make them feel bigger than they think they are. And in that moment, I needed that. It’s never a ‘me,’ it’s always a ‘we,’ and I think that it just makes you feel like we are the only ‘we’ that will ever be on the biggest f***ing tour in the world.”
